It was feral, it was frumpy, it was scary, it was lumpy. I was asked numerous times for a smoke, for a light, for money & even a fight.
Kids swearing & kicking their parents, blokes abusing their missus, grandmothers with horrific tattoos - you couldn’t make this shit up. But it was spend, spend, spend. The lineups to get in, for food & drink and for showbags were astronomical - the food vans were making a killing (and as one vendor said to me with a big grin, “most of it is cash”).
The beer however was reasonably priced. I was chatting to a bloke at the bar which summed it up for me...
“Been to the show before?” he asked me
“Not this one” I replied
“Bit of an eye opener isn’t it? Where you from?”

Yep.

Yes it is lol
I dont know who would attend the show, all the sports minded people would be at the local footy

Unfortunately the demographics have changed big time with the northern suburbs creeping further north.

Hearing you.

We had a runner at the Gawler mid week races about 10 years or so ago. As it happened my brother and I turned up after an Aunts funeral and we were in suits. Horse won, into the committee room for a beer, the president was in sneans!

Gawler is a weird mix. Main north road is the demarcation line. The eastern side (Evanston Park, gawler East, hewett, Springwood) is pretty decent in general, wouldn’t be that different from the newer parts built around the same time, like golden grove or Mawson lakes

The western side (Evanston, Evanston gardens, gawler West, hillier) however is another world and some parts look similar to davoren Park etc

I wouldn't give all of the credit to the Gawlerian's, I'd say there would be a fair contingent of those residing north of Hillbank that would be attending the "poor man's" Royal Show.

Gawler definitely has a fair dero per population ratio but their numbers would be inflated at the Gawler Show, it makes it easier when 26 people get in on a family pass.

Serena Williams' preposterous behaviour at the US Open Final. It saw the already conceited spoilt-brat entitlement syndrome of professional tennis players and raised it to stratospheric heights that would've made McEnroe do a double-take. The gender warrior nonsense she doled out on the court and in the press conference was the longest bow drawn since William Tell took aim at an apple.

I look forward to the authorities soon renaming the game from 'Tennis' to 'Serena Williams', since apparently the whole thing is only about her. Felt sorry for the winner, Osaka, who felt she had to apologise for winning. What the **** indeed.

I feel so sorry for Osaka

Bloody awesome achievement as a young player to win a grand slam and she is up there in tears and apologising to the crowd.
