Only 'coz it's being promoted as such. Lion Nathan has pulled out all stops to grab a chunk of market. They were giving 'em out free at the Marion a few weeks back ferchrissakes.

Don't mind it at all myself, but would buy other beers in preference.

On crafty beers, heard a little story about Pirate Life.

They were brought out by Belgium-based Anheuser-Busch InBev, owners of 500 global brands like Budweiser, Corona, Becks and Carlton & United Breweries here in Australia, well, one of their original owners Jack Cameron is good mates with Nat Fyfe.

Reportedly Fyfe chucked in around $100k to get it up and running and took out around $1m (+/-) when the brewery was sold.

Nice little earner.

Maintaining their ability to stay crafty but have the backing of multinationals, perfect.

Craft generally means made by hand and I doubt these beer once owned by the big boys is made that way.

Mass produced so no longer a craft beer.

Or does craft have a different meaning here?

I think "craft", for me, refers to being made by small breweries which, given their $15m investment in the Port, Pirate Life may struggle to lay claim to anymore.

I also see "craft" beers as being more experimental, more bang for their buck type beers, more flavor than the traditional lagers of the bigger corporate's.

Would depend on production volumes. If they are about the same as before the buy out then yes craft brewer. But if they have the same volume of Pale Ale not a chance.

Lion now owns James Squire, Byron Bay Brewing Co, Little Creatures and White Rabbit, while Carlton makes Yak Ales, Cascade, 4 Pines Brewery and Pirate Life Brewing, among others.

Smaller players include Wesfarmers (the owner of Coles), CocaCola, Woolworths and Asahi, which between them own brands like Yenda, Feral Brewing, Steamrail, John Boston, Mountain Goat and Cricketers Arms.
