So what is the actual purpose of these games, and what do they achieve?

Meaningless rubbish

If they want a Country Championships do it properly, have it as Leagues v Leagues rather than meaningless and soulless zones. Have a qualifying game over the June Long-weekend and then have the finals in July.

They could even call it the Community Football Championships and bring the Adelaide Footy League into the mix. Not sure why 5 suburban leagues (Southern, Great Southern, Hills, BLG, Adelaide Plains) have to risk their players in a meaningless carnival when the Adelaide Footy League get to play through.

Call it what you want, do how you like, but again what's the purpose and what does it achieve?

Scrap zone footy. It only serves purpose to select a state side, which could be done without it. The format with reduced game times is no good. In lieu of zone footy, put the re$ource$ from the championships in to association footy, rank every association and still call it the MAC country championships. Some logistical issues with travel, but we have people from all round the state going to one location on one weekend a year anyway. Associations that pride themselves on rep footy will go up the rankings, those that don't will slide. The state selection committee could be made up of an executive and 1 rep per "zone".

It could look like this to start:

2 v 3 - Great Southern v Hills Div 1 @ Langhorne Creek
4 v 5 - KNTFL v River Muirray @ Keith

Which coincidently appears to have no issues getting players to play. Heck you get players from outside those leagues lying to their current association to play......

Hence why having a carnival in July could work. June long weekend would determine the participants with the winners playing off, this year it could have been:

Division 1
Southern FL (Pilmore Cup winners)
Hills FL (winners RMFL v HFL)
KNTFL (winners of South East Zone Carnival)
Winner of BLGFA v Riverland (only played juniors this year)

Division 2
Great Flinders FL (highest ranked Mortlock Shield League)
North Eastern FL (Landmark Cup winners)
Hills Div 2 (winner of game against Mallee FL)

Senior colts very interesting with Encounter Bay and Myponga Sellicks being the beneficiaries of no Yankalilla team this season. The mind boggles as to just how good they would have been this year.

Creek, Willunga and Compass all had easy wins as expected over the bottom 3 teams in Strath, Gool/PE and Yank
Creeks exacted revenge on Strath for their Anzac Day loss by belting the hapless Roosters who made the score half respectable by kicking a super accurate 11 goal;s from their 12 attempts.

In the 2 crucial matches of the round where Myp/Sell and Victor basically had their seasons on the line, Myp/Sellicks failed their test against McLaren who were also under a bit of pressure after some indifferent form in recent times. Myp/Sellicks going down by 22 points are now a game and % outside the 5 and with very tough games against the Creeks and Compass in the next 2 weeks, one would not fancy their chances of Finals action this year.
Victor on the other hand are certainly making a play for finals with some impressive results in recent weeks. Looking down the barrel at 3/4 time against one of the teams they are targeting to replace in the "5" Enc Bay, trailing by 18 points, Victor prevailed in what must have been a thrilling last term by a solitary point to be now only a half win outside the 5.

Looking ahead to Round 13

Myp/Sellicks will be looking to replicate their Round 4 win over the Hawks and keep their season alive but face a huge task to upset the Creeks this time who have improved immensely since then and have proved to be unbeatable on their home deck this season.
Creeks by 28

McLaren should be comfortably accounting for Strath to consolidate a top 3 spot and continue Straths season of woe
McLaren by 45

Victor will make it 4 on the trot without a loss when they steamroll cellar dwellers Gool/PE who are gonna find it tough for motivation over the next 6 weeks
Victor by 100+

Willunga host Compass and will be looking to replicate their Round 4 win. Since then the form of the teams have switched a bit and one would think Compass will be clear favorites in this one despite the game being played at Willunga.
Compass by 38

E Bay will stay in the 5 for at least another week as they should have a training run over at Yankalilla although nothing should be taken for granted.
Bays by 49

Round 14
Match of the Day E Bay (5th) v L Creek (1st)
Bays have a very tough run home to the finals playing the Top 3 teams although they are all at home. Probably need 3 wins to ensure Finals and with the only guaranteed win being Round 18 v Gool/PE they need to knock off at least one of the Big Guns. Creeks to finish Top may well need to win all their last 5 matches which will be tough as they play MC and McLaren both away. Back to this game tho, Creeks prevailed over the Bays by 12 points in Round 5. Its fair to say the Hawks have improved since then but have the Bays?
Tip - Creeks by 27 points

Myp/Sellicks (7th) v Mt Compass (2nd) Pretty much do or die for the Mudlarks to keep their season alive. Have been around the mark at times during the season and are one of only 2 teams to beat the Creeks so can never be discounted. Compass seem to be getting it together after a patchy start to the season and will be looking for winning form running into the finals. An upset not out of the question but ......
Tip - Compass by 22 points

Yank (9th) v Willunga (4th) - Even with 5 games to go, Willunga look to be a safe bet to finish in 4th spot and should have few problems knocking off the toothless Tigers who have shown glimpses at times but competitive performances have been few and far between.
Tip - Willunga by 53 points

Strath (8th) v Victor (6th) - Victor have been undefeated since copping a pasting by Compass in Round 9 and are charging towards a Finals spot, most likely at the expense of the Bays. Too much at stake for them to drop this one but at same time cant just take it for granted. Strath apart from the Very Good Anzac Day clash win over the Creeks have been very disappointing this season and it would be a surprise to see them upset the Roos who have everything to play for.
Tip - Roos by 38 points

Gool/PE (10th) v McLaren (3rd) - McLaren have made a habit this season on belting up the cellar dweller teams, 216 points the margin last time these 2 teams met. The margin shouldn't be as much this time but will be significant. Another % booster for McLaren which could well decide Top spot after Round 18
Tip - McLaren by 108 points

I see the score for the year between these two at 1 a piece JJ so $1.30 favouritism maybe a little hasty. Yes the GF is at their ground and they were the better side last weekend for sure but the Creeks were undermanned (missing a couple of handy lads) and to add to that had an off day.

On a slick wicket in Sept, big occasion and normal nerves anything is possible. Both still have to get there as well.

This comp is so tough, be off your game by 5% and you can have a scoreless half like the Creeks had especially against quality opposition. We all know Creeks are better than that and we all know Compass are as good as they were.

I wouldn't be handing Compass the GF just yet!!!!

Look at Sydney losing to Gold Coast a few weeks back as $1.03 shots
$1.30 shots get beaten all the time so im not saying Compass are certainties. Give them the flag now may have been a little over reaction
Compass look almost certain to finish top and hence would be very short priced to make the GF on their home ground which is a significant advantage. At full strength i think they're entitled to be very short priced favorites but as we know, sometimes that counts for very little.
