I think he may have played junior footy there, but somewhow finished up at Port through some type of zoning.

Won the McCallum Medal playing for South.

Wanted to follow in his uncle's footsteps, Panther legend Laurie Cahill.

'Big Bob' played hardball when finding out the McCallum Medallist lived in Port's area...

There is only one choice, Darren Trevena, he bring everthing to the club that is required, offer him the $$ and get a long term coach who relates to youth, knows how to coach, is a South past player, and a bloody good one, and will have the best interest of SAFC at heart.

Well from a non-South person's point of view:

(1)Stupid choice if this is true, too old, doesn't care about SAFC: (a) If we take the majority of South Adelaides choices over the last 20 years as a guide it is in fact an inspired choice (b) some of the greatest sporting coaches in the world are well past his age. Age is irrelevant. (c) How on earth can you draw the conclusion that he doesn't care about South? I mean not too many people do though I suppose
(2)his success has been Port and Port only: yes, a very ordinary record over several decades. Those premiership team photos of his must really clutter up the hallway walls
(3) This will prove a failure for both SAFC : as a club well versed in failure over a hundred years they would weather the storm ok. Noone knows more about failure than South Adelaide, a club that had a reunion for a team that played in a losing Grand Final. That is the sort of stuff that makes a club great.

and finally:
* so Cahill is a money man you say, yet somewhat inconsistently you would like the club to offer the $$ to attract a person who has not coached at senior level seemingly only because he is a South past player, and a bloody good one, and will have the best interest of SAFC at heart.I don't see big Dazza's resume being overly inspiring and most of Souths list would never have heard of him.

* it is also inconsistent that someone who obviously reveres one of the champions of South's past (let's face it most people on this forum would not have been born when Peter Darley played his last game - I saw that last game and Darleys ar*e was so big it had it's own postcode by that stage) should reject out of hand the suggestion that the most successful coach the SANFL has ever had would be a bad move for his club.

Agreed saintal....

But good luck with it all anyway. You should be looking for the best available coach and I would think that someone like John Cahill would have forgotten more about coaching than Darren Trevena knows. Which is no disrespect to Darren, he was a very good player but unproven as a coach which I think is the last thing you need.

Valley old boy, yes i am old, old enough to have seen the Jumbo Prince play and therefore old enough to know that Cahill is, like me, too old to be the bloke he once was. Nobody knows of Souths failures more than South people so that diatribe of yours makes this decision by the club even more important, therefore i stand by my previous comments. Cahill was without question a great Port coach of the past, at 67 yo South need a long term younger man who can relate to today's young list of players that play in the SANFL. As for Darley's arse, that was massive, just like the rest of the great man, as for those young folks on this site you all missed out on seeing one of this State's great ruckman, arse and all.

agreed Darley16. I am lucky to be old enough to see Darley play the game in his prime and yes he probably finished his career with a fat backside. In his prime though he would buy and sell any ruckman in the sanfl, he was an automatic selection for the state side for most of the '60's and had a heart bigger than the grandstand.
Don't think I can go along with the idea of Cahill in the job. He has a great record at a club that was always successful, people breaking their necks to get a game, all the infrustructure in place and a winning expectation ever present. I beleive Cahill would find things a little different at Noarlunga. However his appointment would probably be a good investment for the club, from what I've heard his paycheck wouldnt make it to the car park, allegedly.

Ummm... Cahill was instrumental in establishing that "winning expectation". He started coaching Port in 1974, when it had been 9 years since their previous success. He then took out the 77,79,80,81,88,89,90,92,94 & 95 flags, and was well on the way to another in 96 when he handed over to Stephen Williams...

He might be too old, but I think he presents a better option for South than many of the other names being tossed about...

He also did well at Collingwood (in the face of all sorts of back-room politics), got good results at the Bloods and even back at Alberton in 2005 he restored us to a competitive 3rd-place, which was a remarkable achievement after the culture-destroying Knights experiment...

Tell me Alex Ferguson is too old, or Bob Paisley was too old.....
Age is a crap reason for not appointing someone.
If it were to happen I reckon it would be terrific for south and hopefully make some of the SFL lads aspire to play for them under a legend.

I believe Andrew Bruce has resigned at Mt Barker in Hills Central to have a crack at the job. What about Darren Mead?? is he a chance to end up back down there if Gaza go well in the finals??

On cards I guess given that he's already been an assistant down there.
