Create a new date for "Australia Day" - a day for all Australians to celebrate. Introduce new citizens, announce Australians of the year etc. etc... Be inclusive and celebrate diversity and all things good about Australia.

However on a recent tour through the National Treasures at the Library in Canberra came across a poster advertising a rally against "Invasion Day" on Jan 26, 1938, Australia's 150 years, on Melbourne Parliament, which I never knew about.
If I had to vote now, I'd probably vote for a change.

It was founded tens of thousands before then.

All of which is at the behest of the Federal Government. Local Government are the vehicles, not the policy makers.Dogwatcher wrote:morell wrote:It really shouldn't be in Local Government's purview to be making that sort of call. Actually, local government has every right to have a say in this debate.
Just about every Australia Day event in this state is organised by a council.
Those free sausages for breakfast and Australia Day awards are organised by councils.
If council doesn't do these events for the community, who does?
I'm not making a judgement on the debate, but local government has significant investment/ownership of the commemorations and should have a say.
