JAKE Stringer says he felt "shock" and "upset" at being placed on the trade table by the Western Bulldogs, a decision that blindsided him after an exit interview with club officials he thought had gone well.

And he said he had not spoken with coach Luke Beveridge since being told he was on the way out, believing that "it's past that point now".

Stringer told the launch of NAB AFL Trade Radio on Tuesday he accepted that "there's just a whole lot of things I could've done better, whether it was training or games. It's just the whole life sort of thing for me."

But he stressed that he was still a contracted player at the Whitten Oval.

"It is early, so we'll see what happens over the next three weeks," he said.

Stringer's manager Paul Connors said it was likely that All Australian forward would nominate a preferred club for trade in the next few weeks.

Stringer said he was unsure of the reasons he had been put up for trade: "I don't know the exact details on why. I haven't spoken to Bevo. I've spoken to (list manager) Jason McCartney about those type of things."

He said he wanted to remain in Melbourne for family reasons.

"A lot of the Melbourne clubs appeal. I think most of the clubs appeal to me. It's just about meeting them over the next two or three weeks."

Stringer confirmed that he had met Essendon list manager Adrian Dodoro for coffee, but insisted that no one club was ahead of the others in the race for his services.

"It's way too early for that. There's still a lot of water to go under the bridge between now and trade period," he said.

News that he had been put up for trade came after an exit interview Stringer considered had been positive.

"We just spoke about family and life and I was really confident walking out of there," he said.

He then got a phone call from his managers letting him know he had been placed on the trade table.

Stringer said he saw no point in discussing his situation further with Beveridge: "It's past that point now. It's sort of just one of those things."

And he rejected any suggestion that he and Bulldogs teammates had celebrated too long and hard after their 2016 premiership.

"No, I don't think so. We certainly enjoyed the premiership, as we should have, but everyone came back to pre-season ready to go. That was our mantra after it."

Stringer said the past couple of years had been tough, but he was confident he could get back to his best in the future, saying that he saw himself playing a mixture of midfield and forward.

"I'm really confident that I can get back to somewhere where my best is," he said.

"I was pretty unlucky this year with a few injuries, but I put in the hard work in the pre-season. I'm really confident I'll put in another really good pre-season."
If you want to go quickly, go alone.

If you want to go far, go together.

Not sure why he would be shocked after an exit interview!

Maybe it was details from the other players exit interviews that led to this...

Most clubs call them exit interviews, as in exit from season 2017, not so much exit the building type.

Because all was fine at the exit interview. The Dogs called Jake and his manager a few days later and told him of their decision so it was never face to face

Puts the Dogs in an interesting position.

He's got a year to run on his contract, they're unlikely to reconcile so the club who chooses to trade for him ( if he chooses to nominate only one ) is in a pretty strong position.

They could back end a deal that makes the Dogs pay some of his salary next year and pay unders in way of trade value.

While his potential is huge is form wasnt great this season. Need to be careful of not giving up too much.

If he gets his head right, he could be anything. 17 clubs should be lining up for his services.

FREMANTLE is open to trading youngster Harley Balic to a Victorian club after the midfielder requested a trade back to his home state.

Which could just as easily mean "if some idiot wants to pay him $1mil per season he'll start packing now"

Yeah fair point. Managers do a pretty good job of playing the game though obviously.

Judging by how quickly he left his family after his 2nd was born, he has no qualms about leaving his kids behind
