Im talking years ago

Why do the AFL need to be responsible for Ben? His decisions weren't made on tge footy field.

The only thing I can say that the AFL is responsible for and itisn't just solely them. The AFL clubs also. And that is for the amount of money Ben was able to make while he played ffooty. Now I am not saying that if the money he was getting paid wasn't as significant he wouldn't be able to fund his habit as he would've found other means of paying with what he was earning. Junkies and addicts will always find a way to support their habit no matter how much money they have. The AFL and the clubs financial agreements just make it a hell of a lot easier for the players to have a lot of money to throw around. Obviously like what Ben did. Other than what I am trying to say. The only main responsibility lays purely on Ben.

The only, and indirect, contribution by the AFL is overpaying immature jocks.
It is up to the individual whether they decide to grow up and make adult choices, and the result of the choices they make is entirely their own responsibility.

The only thing i believe the AFL is to blame for is their ability to keep their head in the sand for so long when there has been clearly a bad drug culture in the AFL the early 2000's i know off.

The SANFL is no innocent party in regards to this as well.

I think far to often clubs are the first to know about these types of issues but will generally take the approach of what suits them best rather than the individuals needs. Performing players can get away with almost anything.

Don't forget the club itself. West Coast were disgraceful with their conduct here. They simply turned a blind idea when it was clear to everyone what was going on under their noses - Mainwaring, Kerr, Fletcher, Cousins... What do you think a big part of Judd leaving was?
As for their coach at the time Worsfold - the bloke's a pharmacist, did he not have an inkling of what was going on?
They should've been looked at far more closely at the time.

Agree the club always has their own interests over the individuals interests.

If someone like Ben Cousins is performing at a high level they will quickly turn the head away.

Watch how quick though it becomes an issue if the player isn't performing or they need to get rid of the player.

For what its worth.

I would make him a part of my decision making team.

Look he is a great man.

He needs a purpose in life.

A reason to achieve something,

His kids are that reason.

His kids are a reason to grow above this.

Ben, contact me.

The guy needs to be locked up for a while and cleansed, if his family and support group can't do anything to help, how the hell could you?

Unfortunately we're going to wake up to some tragic news one morning with Ben being the headline before too long.

To be honest, he's had chances, he's had help. Sympathy for him is near non existent. His kids (and missus) however don't deserve any of this. I hope he finally gets himself right for their sake.
