SANFL 2017

Post by Wedgie »

Adam Kelly, GM of the SANFL: "We think playing more Saturday afternoon football will be welcomed by the clubs, the competition and the fans.’’

Derr!

Last year a club asked for all Saturday afternoon home games and got shafted with a lot of Sunday games. You'd hope these people aren't as out of touch and stupid as they seem.

PS I'm after a new job next year after calling an end to a 28 year career. Send me a pm SANFL. You'd make your money back ten times.

Yes, and morning matches! I love watching footy on dew. ;)
I'm gonna sit back, crack the top off a Pale Ale, and watch the Double Blues prevail

If correct, a master stoke of programming indeed.
One less bye, that was an easy fix.
With a State game (wow)
,that would be a month of closed SANFL footy.
Just what the struggling clubs and sponsors don't need,
keeping supporters away from the game,
and clubs business closed for a fifth of the minor round.

Lesser crowds still...

One day only mum's and Dad's of players will come.

Once they used to make you pay to come to SANFL.

The future may be, you receive an admittance fee,

We have lost SANFL..

A brilliant post,
sadly the SANFL is sound asleep.
Why don't the clubs scream?

Hooray,hooray,Saturday footy at last,
the SANFL have been listening to people who turn up and support the clubs at the gate.
They have now got the program half right.
Now the other half of the problem.
Please dump the byes before it is too late for half the clubs.

How many games will they show? In particular, will there be lost weekends like in 2016?

You would think that this might be somewhere in the top 10 of issues sorted out in a broadcast agreement, but nope, not mentioned anywhere.

Being on channel 7 main channel is a mixed blessing—it will mean that notional 'Saturday afternoon' footy actually starts at all kinds of bizarre times in order to fit in with AFL broadcasting schedules, and pre-game and/or post-game will be cut away to nothing if the broadcast schedule is tight. 7 Mate would mostly be better.

I think that there's a bit of slipperiness here—footy fans have overwhelmingly told the SANFL that they want to see footy on Saturday arvo (although of course Friday night will get more through the gate). That doesn't necessarily mean that those who don't go to games will watch footy on TV in greater numbers on Saturday arvo. I would be surprised if there was any statistically significant difference in TV ratings from Saturday arvo to Sunday arvo broadcasts.

Saturday arvo football at SANFL level is a double edge sword for the clubs as they are the worst slot for people through the gate.
But all the hardcore supporters want Saturday football yet are the ones who will turn up either way!?

So who do you appease? The rusted on supporters or try to capture new supporters in different time slots!?

got some figures to back that up?
I remember reading a Spelly post years ago, where he provided figures that showed Friday night games are the highest drawing time slot, even in the coldest months of winter. I am not sure about Sundays though. I would hazard a guess that the Sunday games work as a novelty, whereas this year they became the stock.

I only keep the Norwood stats but the average crowds for each time slot are below.
This is from 2010 - 2016 on average
note the Thursday games are generally marque games so rate higher
Thursday 5814
Thursday Night 6949
Friday Night 5236
Saturday 2989
Sunday 3516

Thanks for those stats Fonzie.
I would hazard a guess that Saturday figures were better than Sunday's for the 2016 season? Just following the logic that the Sunday games draw more as a novelty.
It would also be interesting to measure the figures against what AFL games were on at the time. Are Sundays more popular because the Crows and Port are playing/ being telecast more often on the Saturday, in direct competition with SANFL games?

Attendance by Day 2016 (Avg)
Friday/Thurs 3745.5
Saturday 2051.5
Sunday 2627.2

No 2016 followed the trend albeit all were well down! mainly due to Norwood being horrid to watch.
I think 6 years worth of home and away games is a fair summary and takes into account AFL clashes etc.

Thanks again.
I think that would be a reasonable assessment.
P.S. I don't mind watching Norwood so much these days.

It's an interesting one. From a purely selfish POV, I don't mind Sunday/Friday games because it allows me to go to the games due to my own Saturday footballing commitments.. Im sure I am not the only one in this boat either. Eagles played more Sunday/Friday footy this year than Saturday, so I got my moneys worth. But lets face it, at the end of the day it all comes down to when the AFL sides are playing as to what happens with the scheduling of the SANFL unfortunately

V difficult for me to get out on Sunday. family day. As a novelty I can take them to the footy. Saturday is much more workable on a regular basis.
