The RSPCA and animal activists who campaigned for this will look after them as pets

Re: Greyhound racing banned in NSW from 1st July 2017
I find the figures given a bit unbelievable. Between 48000 & 68000 greyhounds killed in 12 years, thats rougly 4000 to 5500 killed a year in NSW alone. I'm surprised there are that many bred a year.
Hopefully Baird has the balls to speak out against live animal exports but I doubt it.

NSW premier seems to care more about Dogs then people in general. Happy to campaign for Greyhounds welfare, but is happy to drain the water source of 10,000s of people at an unknown affect to the health of these people and communities so he can get the kick backs from the Rich Cotton growers in rural NSW.

Thought it would be far more than that, that surprises me. Is that just metro or regional as well?
Reports it's 10,000 paid employees. That is breeders, trainers and attendants at the venues.

This is gonna get real interesting.
Whoever wrote his press release is quite amateurish cos it appears that all dog breeding will be banned.....
Let's ban an industry that has had a minority do the wrong thing, but we will give drug addicts a place to shoot up......

Re: Greyhound racing banned in NSW from 1st July 2017
For me this is a very short sighted, easy decision.
$90 million is generated by the greyhound industry in NSW back to the state government. This money will no longer be generated.
10,000 people are employed by the industry (through direct and indirect employment). obviously this will increase unemployment and welfare payments.
If the NSW government don't need the $90 million and the health and safety of the dogs is their priority, what should happen is this.
the $90million per year should do this.
1) Employ a greater number of stewards and investigators to actually try and punish the offenders, not the entire industry
2) Build some expansive retirement kennels for all the greyhounds which aren't taken in the Greyhound adoption program. This will mean more builders are employed and once the kennels are up and running more people will be employed to ruin the kennels.
Doing the above will achieve so many great outcomes for everyone (except those who do do the wrong thing, or those with ulterior motives) basically better animal protection and more jobs
1) More employment with the new stewards and investigators
2) Saves up to 10,000 industry jobs
3) Creates more infrastructure projects through the building of the retirement kennels
4) Creates more jobs through staffing the retirement kennels
5) Less live baiting/animal cruelty with the extra scrutiny of the new stewards and investigators
6) No deaths of the dogs that are apparently slaughtered due to not being fast enough
7) As more dogs are alive more vets, dog food etc is needed so that will create more jobs in the economy

Nope Government banned for 7 days.
However, a week long carnival on the central coast will go ahead as a lot of the trainers and dogs had arrived before they decided to pull the plug.

I understand why the Government has placed the ban and the general criticism of the industry.
This is an outstanding post as a compromise

SA Government said they're not considering anything similar. And why would they?
Because they have their heads stuck up their arse thats why.
How they can say that the industry here is completely different to NSW is laughable.
Ive grown up in an area where greyhounds have been trained and ever since ive been a kid ive heard the stories of slow greyhounds simply being shot and live possums and rabbits used for training and theres little reason to suggest that these barbaric practices still dont exist tho maybe not on the same scale as once was.
Also to suggest that greyhound racing is a sport is also laughable.
If it wasnt for the gambling $ it wouldn't exist.
Theres been many unpopular decisions that have changed societys lifestyles over time, but in time, life goes on often for the better.
Think i read somewhere the government was willing to help those affected by the shutdown and if they do that properly then the impact on those involved should be minimized.

My understanding is that the SA Greens are going to ask for an investigation in SA.
Apparently there are elements of the Libs sympathetic to this.

Greyhound racing ban: NSW Opposition leader Luke Foley vows to fight for industry
Shots fired back!
National MP's not happy.
If the issues that concern the NSW premier led to the closure announcement then why isn't more industry participants being brought before the courts with animal cruelty offences?
