Greyhound racing banned in NSW from 1st July 2017
It's a big move, but I can see after what has been reported over there why the move will be made. I guess a fair portion of participants over there will move interstate.

Massive decision to can a whole industry that supports many, many families.
Only 8 countries still allow it across the globe. It will be gone completely in 2-3 years.
If you want to go quickly, go alone.
If you want to go far, go together.

Makes SA's stance on jumps racing look even further behind the times, too.

Only a matter of time. We go to Oakbank most years, and if the jumps were no longer contested, it would make zero difference to us, nor I suspect the majority who go.
1961, 1971, 1976, 1978, 1983, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1991, 2008, 2013, 2014, 2015.... And don't you forget it!

Problem is once the Jumps cave in these **** will turn their attention the flats.
**** me a Horse could snap its leg trotting back to its stable from the paddock.......
If Baird has the balls to follow through with this he should immediately abolish the requirement for Greyhounds to be muzzled in public.

This hasn't resulted from "these ****", it resulted from a documentary which then prompted a view from a conservative government.
It wasn't prompted by animal rights activists - sure, they'll be delighted, but this decision had nothing to do with them.
I'm not even sure it will go through, tbh.

The banning.
Yes, they're strong on it now. But it will be interesting to see what happens now that the backlash is hitting.
SA Government said they're not considering anything similar. And why would they?

Re: Greyhound racing banned in NSW from 1st July 2017
SA Government supports local greyhound industry
The State Government has announced its support for South Australia’s $50 million greyhound industry - following a decision by the NSW Government to ban the sport.
Racing Minister Leon Bignell said the industry in South Australia was completely different to New South Wales and there was no evidence of illegal activity here.
Last year, the State Government introduced changes to the Animal Welfare Act 1985 to include new offences for participation in live-baiting.
In South Australia, we have less than 10 per cent of NSW breeding numbers and we rehome six to seven times more greyhounds than in NSW.
Greyhound Racing SA is also spending $7.4 million at Murray Bridge to build the safest dog track in Australia.
We have examined the NSW report to ensure we can look for other ways to improve the sport here.
Background
The changes to the Animal Welfare Act 1985 include new offences and increased maximum penalties for breaches of the new laws – up to $50,000, or imprisonment for four years.
During the past two years, Greyhound Racing SA has amended the local rules of racing, increased the number of animal welfare and compliance staff, increased the number of inspections of properties, purchased equipment: fleet vehicles and drones to assist with the inspection of large properties; increased testing or swabbing of greyhounds; and have made it compulsory for registered participants to disclose all private training or trialling facilities.
Quotes attributable to Racing Minister Leon Bignell:
For the past two years, the State Government has been working with the RSPCA and Greyhound Racing SA to make sure we have the very best conditions for animals and proper processes in place to guard against illegal activity.
In South Australia, the industry is worth about $50 million and it employs hundreds of people across the state.

Estimates are 1000-1200 direct jobs with around 6000-8000 people having a share or owning a dog.

Thought it would be far more than that, that surprises me. Is that just metro or regional as well?
