In doing so, the ump must have applied a new interpretation to the rule as the ball definitely went out of bounds of the boot.

The rule was explained in the Budget of round 1 and definitely made reference to the shepherd out scenario and a throw in at umpires discretion.
IMO the mistake Barmby made was to run with his arms out, if he had "made an effort" to get there would of been a free no problem. To me this just adds another layer of interpretation to deliberate out of bounds and implies an opposition player has a duty to keep the ball in to the possible detriment of his team.
BTW I didn't think Barmby would have got to it anyway.

LAST POSSESSION OUT OF BOUNDS

A Free Kick shall be awarded against a Player who:
Kicks or Handballs the football over the Boundary Line without the football being touched by another Player;
Except where a Player who does not have possession stops the football being touched by an Opposition Player by Shepherding the football across the Boundary Line where the football could have otherwise been touched.

So now rather than have umpires interepret whether a ball has been dilberately kicked out we have a situation where umpires have to decide whether a player is deliberately going for the ball or not

Even more of a grey area than the deliberate rule

From what I have seen in the first three weeks there has been many occasions where players have deliberately got in the way of an opposition player to allow it to run out bounds and it has been paid as the free kick not the throw in

This weekend there are four dinkum games and no trial matches.
This weekend there is no televised game.
Coincidence? Surely not...

Willits dominating in ruck for Westies according to the stats, with 9 hit outs.
Parrella, who had a significant impact for the Blues v Central with only 2 hit outs, and no other stats to his name. With our concerns over big man depth this year, we would hope he can positively follow up last week's performance.

Parrella winning a few ruck taps now with 10 hit outs. At only 18 y/o and a good size at 205 cm, I am very interested to see how he gets going.
Still Willits and now Webb with 27 hit outs between them dominating the stats.
