Not condoning what he did, but having a father who suffered from and battled schizophrenia for 10 years (2 suicide attempts, 1 successful), I have seen first hand how mental illness f**ks people up, and makes them do things they know are wrong, but still can't stop themselves.

For the family who recognised his illness, yes. For the innocent victims dragged into this mess absolutely. Those closest to him will look back and think what more could have been done to help him.
