Another example of the outstanding community work the Port Adelaide Football Club does. Really does make us a club, not just another franchise. You can go and have a meal on a Thursday and listen to some players or coaches speak, you can go into the club after a training session and chat with the boys while they have a coffee or a feed. I don't know how many AFL clubs would be that inclusive.( Sits down and cowers as popcorn and drinks get hurled at him )

The Aboriginal AFL Academy is changing the lives of many kids and in turn their families in so many positive ways. It's a credit to all involved.

I don't think so.. Regardless if it is or not it's irrelevant. Good on them, almost identical to what Goodes did. But since Goodes didn't do this, it's ok (so it should be)

I wasn't saying it was a bad thing more a case of that I grew up with some best mates who were aboriginals and lived with them for a period of time as well as working in aboriginal communities and until the last year or so I had never heard of a 'aboriginal war cry'

Would 'war cry' be the correct way to describe it though, it was never used in a war by the sounds of it and it's very unlikely it will be every used in a war.

I think people should be proud of their heritage and history!!!

And not to get into it but it's a completely different scenario to the goodes one, no comparison at all

Is that the academy that Reggie runs? One of the best guys you will ever meet.

No difference what so ever! Indigenous man doing an indigenous dance created by indigenous people in indigenous round! Should have never been n issue but people made it one
Both these instances they are proud of their heritage.
And I'll put my house on it that if someone else did what Goodes did that round it wouldn't have been an issue!

Great example of double standards.
Both groups should be applauded for this.

Completely different when a bloke who claims racism towards him then goes and fuels the fire further by doing it towards a group of opposition supporters after he complained about crowds booing him............... Now that's double standards!!!!

Anyway we will have to agree to disagree!!

Good work by port!!!

Dance has always been a strong part of aboriginal story telling and ceremony - it's definitely been happening for a long time. Whether or not its been referred to as a "war cry" is another thing though.

In the NRL the Aboriginal All stars have performed a "war cry" every time they've played, so it's not a new concept.

Just because you've never heard of these things, doesn't mean they didn't exist.. ;)

The academy in now way gives us any advantage in drafting the kids, in fact very few would be on the radar for AFL recruits.

Good work by Adelaide and I understand your confusion with what I said about being an inclusive club, it would be foreign to you. ;)

Nah I didnt see that bit, just the bit about being a club and not just another franchise. Most other clubs and their supporters don't feel the need to use initiatvies that their club is doing to try and put down other clubs.

If you felt it put your "club" down it's your perception. I just noted how well mine does that sort of thing.

Agree dance has and will be a very strong part of aboriginal communities forever

I wasn't saying that just coz I haven't heard of it it didn't exsist it was just unusual

Would I be right in saying the NRL aboriginal all star annual game has been around less than 10 years

There has never really been a need/opportunity/platform whatever you want to call it for A&TSI people to display their culture in the form of a "war cry" on a national sporting stage.

The only real time I can recall seeing anything about Aboriginal culture in the media growing up was a couple second snippet of some tourism commercial.

Yes the NRL annual game would have been around less than 10yrs, but there have been matches of Aboriginal vs NZ Maori over the years as curtain raisers that have incorporated a dance or "war cry".

Why do people feel they have the right to decide when something like this is appropriate? A bunch of kids do it and aww its too deadly, fantastic display of culture etc.. Adam Goodes does it and there is national outcry - how could he do that! Know your place blacky - you could've hurt someone with that spear..

I definately don't think it should be put away, as I said I think it's great to see people of any culture proud about their heritage and display it in a way that is appropriate (such as the port and aboriginal war cry has been done). I definately think the Adam Goodes scenario is completely different though and can't be compared to the other examples.

I was more just interested in the history behind what appeared to me as almost like a 'fad' and wanted to know whether the 'war cry' was the best term for it. Personally I don't like the word war being referred to when talking about sport

I think Aboriginal culture is something that should be taught more thoroughly within our schools and something our country should be proud off

Totally different debate but do believe the black, red and yellow should be incorporated into the Australian flag in an appropriate way as well

War cries or dances have been part of Rugby League for well over 100 years.
Can't have aboriginal colours on the flag without Torres Strait representation too, I'd prefer a flag that incorporates all things Aussie like the Southern Horizon flag. I'd also prefer Australia day a true representitive day of all cultures, not just one but that's another story
