actually, we spent over $60k on our car, and yes, i do drive it in a paddock, every chancce i get. its quite fun actually, you should try it. just make sure you use the right paddock, the farmer usually gets a bit shirty when you do it in the middle of the crop....

So its a 4 wheel drive that is built for that purpose... makes perfect sense..... I think we have 2 different arguments here!

Yes and no. The current car is a 4wd, but i also did it in my ss ute, and thats far from high riding, and was north of 50k to purchase. Circlework is fun.

I just dont see the argument that because there is "crap" in the cycle lanes you wont ride there. Get some decent puncture resistant tyres, and suck it up. Inconveniencing other road users in no way makes them sympathetic to cyclists, there needs to be give and take, on both sides

In a lot of European countries bikes have right of way no matter what and the fault is always given to the car driver in an accident.

If you really wanna encourage riding that's what should happen, but it shows how far off we are in this country that people bitch and moan about a bike lane

I have no issue with bike lanes, I have issue with cyclists who ride outside them and hold up the natural flow of traffic

Especially when they ride two abreast on a narrow winding hills road and refuse to transfer to single file...

PS: Apropos the debate above, my bike is only worth about $1K and is a hybrid with lockable front shocks, puncture resistant tyres, and hydraulic disk brakes, chosen carefully to be able to be ridden almost anywhere and not just on smooth tarmac with all cars banished.

Tell me, if you are driving out in the country, and you become "inconvenienced" on the road by a slow moving piece of farm machinery.... do you toot your horn when you go past.... do you yell abuse.... do you "run it off the road"....... these things all happen to cyclists.... but Farmer Brown in his old tractor.... that's acceptable?!?

Like all road users (drivers, cyclists, pedestrians) there are idiots among them...so don't pigeon hole all cyclists as idiots... there is a percentage for sure.

I ride & drive a car... I see both sides!

Farmer Brown usually moves over on to the verge and lets you pass...

Not always though, I was behind one this morning, a very large one though which despite being on the verge took up the entire lane. I waited for about 1.5 k's before I could pass.... I sucked it up, as suggested on here!... sometimes cyclists do move into single file as well to let you pass

Exactly, too many times they ride three or four abreast outside the bike lanes on Lower North East Road. How hard is to stick to a designated bike lane FFS? It's arrogance like that which pisses motorists off.

Totally agree, I quite often cycle, I do refuse to wear lycra though (footy shorts a singlet and a fluorescent vest), it isn't that hard to keep as far as possible to the left or in the bike lane.
At the end of the day, I'd sooner not place my life in the hands of others.
The stretch of road on Prospect Road between Regency and Grand Junction is possibly the scariest to ride on.

While I do not advocate riding outside the bike lane, nor two & three abreast.... its a good idea to leave yourself a bit of "room" with which to dive to the left in case of the idiot driver who thinks that imprinting his side mirror into your right shoulder is a good idea. So for me keeping to an "extreme" left is not a good idea either..... I agree with you on that stretch of Prospect Road.... there are simply many roads I refuse to ride on because they are just too dangerous. Particularly for the solo rider.... that's why many ride in bigger groups, it's actually safer!

all i see there is take.

you choose to use inappropriate tyres for the conditions you ride in, and so it is fine to inconvenience all the cars that have to pass your slow moving road block so as to prevent you getting punctures in the cycle lane? that sounds reasonable.....

its also a lot less common to encounter farmer brown than it is the lycra brigade in peak hour traffic. ut i certainly do get frustrated when i have been held up by earthmoving equipment in peak hour on the way to town. i personally think any special purpose vehicle should be barred from the roads between certain times

however, never have i found the need to toot, yell at and certainly never run a cyclist off the road. but all those things happen to drivers too, so not sure that is something limited to those on two wheels anyway

i think you need to check what "extremely" and "appropriate" mean when you immediately follow up that statement with "on others, not so much".

you dont have to take my advice, but then stop defending your poor choices as a reason to inconvenience other road users. just admit that it is a selfish decision on your part that causes you to not use the bike path sometimes. and that you dont care about the flow of traffic. its ok. we are all allowed to be selfish at times, just stop pretending it is otherwise.

I use race tyres on my race bike they are appropriate for the MAJORITY of what I do. It is not illegal to ride on the road, so while it is not illegal (although inconvenient to you) I will continue to do so. I don't believe I inconvenience any other road user at all. I usually ride either alone, or with one other bloke. I DO care about the traffic flow.... If you have actually read my post, you would see I drive a car as well. I share your frustration at cyclists who do the wrong thing. I also am frustrated when I see motorists do the wrong thing. What say you stick to your "off roading" adventures... while you attempt to be a smart arse and suggest I should try it some day.... I don't need to compensate for a small penis like yourself!
