It's a fine line. Players need Monday to Friday jobs as they can't survive on income from football. Club's are struggling to turn profits to fund player payments as it is so you can't just up the cap without analysis on how each club is going to afford an increase.

AS it is reported that WA clubs get a massive $250000 from their AFL teams involvement in the WAFL (if it is true?) perhaps the SANFL clubs could demand a little bit more than the measly $50000 they get at the moment. Then they might be able to complete and survive

Another point.

Amateur clubs now officially pay players and they are allowed to have a marquee player thats payments arent recorded to the salary cap.

But SANFL clubs dont have this option.

WHy the hell not ?

Might help the drain of players to country clubs if we have the same options.

Also might stop three time magarey medalists and state ruckmen signing for Div 3 ammo clubs.

SANFL presidents should be either challenging this or adopting it.

Easier to get approval when you have a precedent btw.

For what it's worth the Amateur League doesn't have the marquee player provision, albeit the Country leagues do.

Even in the country leagues the marquee player's whole payment is included within the cap. It's just a provision that allows club's to pay more than the maximum amount per game to an individual player to the marquee player.

It's not like the A League marquee player at all.

You'd also be hard pressed to say Allan and Kurtze are playing Amateurs for pure cash. Kurtze in particular has made a lifestyle choice.

Absolute Bollocks!!!!!! Without the $$$$$ theyd have no interest in Pembroke.

My understanding is a marquee players payments arent included in the new salary cap. Either way.

If Ammos can have it.

SANFL should I knwo Id be arguing for it.

Kurtze is an old scholar of Pembroke, and Jimmy got a job at the school. The guys that run Pembroke are dead against any player payments so those 2 aren't in it for the $$$
Other clubs yes, but not Pembroke.

I'm confident they're on the max $400 (certain one is and confident not any more).

Kurtze is a Senior Associate specialising in taxation at a top 10 (nation wide) law firm. It would be impossible to commit to League footy and give his work the attention it needs. He's done well to last this long.

UK Fan, that may be "your understanding" but if you take the time to read the rules you'll find it's plainly wrong

Given his job outside of footy then he doesn't need to be motivated by $$$. Could get away with training 1 time per week too if he wanted.

Additionally, to UK Fan's assertion that they'd have no interest in Pembroke but for cash is plainly incorrect. One certainly turned down a much larger offer from a salary cap non-compliant league. Both would have had substantially more offered than Pembroke at even salary cap compliant leagues which have the marquee player rule

Purely the love of it.

BOLLOCKS!!!!!!!!!!!

Did they play at Norwood, North and Sturt for free and just for the love of it? I don't understand your point?

Yes cash is a motivating factor. But the cash is less than their market value. Both will earn substantially less money from football in 2016 than they did in 2015 and both will earn a lot less at Pembroke than they would have else where. You should have seen Tanunda's offer to Kurtze.

Point is SAAFL/country league salary cap will change nothing for SANFL clubs with the current set up as per original post.

Fact a 3 time magarey medallist and the best ruckmen in the comp have left the SANFL to play ammos helps proves that.

Why isnt Kurtze playing for Sturt ??? To far to travel ???

Or is it cos he can earn more playing ammos/gawler league whilst training less.

IM not having a crack at pembroke / Tanunda / Allan or Kurtz. Wish them all the best.

But to suggest these players are playing div 3 for the of love it is a massive stretch. Quite simply I dont believe it.

SANFL needs to adopt a few of these proposed payment structures to compete. ie the introduction of marquee players is one example

Would think Tanunda would of offered $1500-$2000 but they have plenty of major sponsors who would easily cover the cost

It's well documented why Kurtze left. You cannot be a Senior Associate at Thomson Geer and commit to SANFL football. He'd be putting in 60 hour working weeks regularly. You cannot combine that with what is expected by a league club if you're doing the right thing by your employer and your club.

Short of Sturt topping his wage (which would be 6 figures) he was never going to continue playing SANFL.

He wants to keep playing though, at a level he can give a commitment to. If he can earn a few dollars doing so, so much the better. I can promise you, in his case community football dollars was not the difference between playing SANFL and not. There was no circumstance where he was playing SANFL next year.

Re Marquee players, the top paid SANFL players earn more than any community player as it is. This wouldn't accomplish much. If it's financial incentives the League needs to raise the salary cap league wide and increase game payments for League and Reserve. Whether this is actually sustainable I have no idea

Thank you.

Yet again not having a crack at Angus(I'd do the same)simply the fact the above will continue to occur salary cap or not. Plus aren't Allan and Kurtz assistant coaches ???

You are aware of the justification as to why the salary cap was brought in was to try and prevent the above ???

Pig shit they would. Daniel Motlop stated I'm playing country footy cos I get more than playing at North ffs. Sanfl salary cap is just over $300k no one player would be getting football payments of anywhere near what welsh/Petrie/Clayton/sheedy/Waterhouse/ladhams and co. have been getting paid In country leagues for years. Are you suggesting James Allan with his employment gig at Pembroke is taking a massive pay cut purely for the honor or representing a div 3 club.

Dreaming.

Marquee players(even if half wage is not included in salary cap)is one suggestion for sanfl to try and truly combat the issue.

If Ammo/country clubs are allowed to attract marquee players for their clubs why can't SANFL clubs is my question ??? Maybe concentrate on the big picture.

That's a big loss for the Doggies. He was in spectacular form throughout the finals I saw them play and clearly led the team on the field, marshaling the troops.

He's got life after football to think about, obviously, so to secure a job in the AFL system in his home state at the risk of missing perhaps one or two tops more years of SANFL football is an offer to good to refuse.

He's been one Bulldog you couldn't help but admire from afar. One of Centrals best in their era of dominance. Well played, Thommo.

Yep, despite the fact his killed us so many times over such a long period, it's been impossible not to admire him. Plays the game as it should be played imho, honest and hard, never shirking an issue. Well done on a great career!

Farewell to the King of the North.
Having expected him to retire after the prelim, with no announcement having been made, I'd got used to the fact he was going to play on.
I'm actually sadder now that an era has ended, than I would have been had he made his announcement after the final.

A great player for us. As honest and hard-at-it as his old man (a hero from my childhood), who turned back the clock this season and provided some fantastic leadership to his young side.

Sadly, after a season of so much hope, particularly at the end, I feel the recruiting team is going to have to do a superlative job, if we are to maintain that momentum gained. Some of the departures are massive and the potential loss of Kyle Presbury to a rookie list will hurt us.
You're my only friend, and you don't even like me.

Bounce of the ball wrote:All the talk around salary caps with the Eagles , couldn't see Norwood recruiting too many more. Not a great history . Salary cap far too low anyway . Thats why guys like Gordon stand out in our comp but do nothing at AFL level. He isn't AFL standard. The AFL & SANFL have got this all wrong. Draft them at 20 , raise the SANFL salary cap significantly. Everyone wins. We see our young guns for a few years , our comp gets stronger. Then they are AFL ready to go in the first season as they have had the work put into them with strength and size and have been playing against mature bodies. It probably turns out cheaper for AFL clubs .

Been saying it for years lift the draft age let players mature in the SANFL & WAFL, let them get their Uni degrees etc then play in the AFL might get players from other states then wanting to get looked at by playing in the best two comps in the land outside of the AFL.

Works well in the USA, finish college get your degree play college football and get drafted makes sense to me!!!

Agree. There was this push 15-20 years ago that the AFL clubs had to draft them young to get them into their clubs system rather than playing a year or two at SANFL level (Brett James, Steven Sziller, Jamie Tape), but that argument now doesn't hold weight any more IMO given the amount of players that are easily traded and delisted.
The benefits of the mental maturity probably overshadows the physical maturity slightly in an AFL context, whereas the NFL is possibly the other way around.
