Geelong should host a final at the cattery

Postby westozfalcon » Mon Jul 23, 2007 2:25 pm

It seems Geelong have all but secured a home final so why can't they be allowed to take full advantage of that and play it (or them) at Skilled Stadium?

Given the choice, surely they'd fancy their chances of winning on a Saturday afternoon at their home deck than they would at the G or the Telstra Dome - especially against a Victorian team where there'd be a big crowd cheering the opposition too.

Obviously Skilled Stadium isn't rated as a finals venue by the AFL but I think that should be reviewed. The emphasis should be on giving advantage to the team that earns the home final, not getting a big pay day at the turnstiles.

It holds more than the GABBA did at one stage when the GABBA hosted an early final.
Would never happen though, just another eg of the dream run interstate clubs get which Geelong don't get.

I'm sure the club would cop a 2 hour drive to get 1/2 $$$ proceeds of 80,000 at the G versus 30,000 at Skilled Stadium, just quietly.

The arrangement with the MCG regarding finals is that there must be a minimum no of games at the G over a 5 year period (I think it's 5 years). With the recent run of non-Victorian home finals I understand the G is behind schedule so won't be keen on losing 2 potential games to Skilled Stadium.

Even Frank Costa admitted the ground isn't ready for a home final yet.

Look at it as still being a final in their home state with no flights involved. Besides, VFL finals have been played at the G, or the Doom or Waverley for years now and the clubs involved in the past haven't tried to get home finals at their suburban grounds.

We must show-case the Victorian-based finals in the best stadiums IMO.

I can't say I'm too worried about this. Surely anything that provides maximum exposure for the maximum amount of fans is the right option. If we are good enough we should be able to win anywhere in Victoria at the very least.

What I'd rather Geelong get is a higher number of matches at the G and pi55 off the Dome as our 'home' venue for matches against clubs such as St Kilda and Western Bulldogs in particular. Lets play St Kilda and the Bullies at Cat Park and Carlton and Essendon at the G when we are supposed to be at home. Having to play 'home' matches against the Saints and the Bulldogs at the Dome is a joke.

regards,

I thought that the league ran the finals not the clubs so "home" gate reciepts would not be much of an issue to the club concerned. The grand final sides dont split the Grand Final gate Reciepts .

Two chances

1. F@&* all
2. None

Though I do believe that they should. The two SA sides do, the two WA sides do, Sydney and Brisbane do and the Melbourne sides seem to get the ground they use a bit. Much more of an on-ground advantage at Kardinia Park but then again the AFL will say "there's no enough revenue coming in". Sad but true!

Why play a home final it might get you to the Grand Final quicker but where do you play the Grand Final. I would rather play all my finals at the G. Why because you have a better advantage than the opposition playing at Footy Park, Subiaco, SCG or Gabba. But my Question is this if North Melbourne gets a home final can they play it at The gold coast?
