Just on the buddy franklin issue - I'm impressed the footy community is at a point where people with mental health issues aren't ridiculed, because i don't think that was the case even 5 years ago.

Still got a long way to go on the two big ones though, racism and sexism

I just hope this is a mental health issue and its not being used to cover something else.

The term 'mental health issues' appears to be the term relied upon by the club in their dealings with the media, but it has a pretty broad scope. It could be depression, for example, but (as far as I understand it) it could also be any form of addiction.

If Franklin's issue is the former, a la Mitch Clark, then why not say so? Clark's recent battles (as with others before him, such as Nathan Thompson) and an improved awareness in the general community thanks to organisations such as Beyond Blue etc have cleared a space for depression to be treated and recognised in the footy world with the respect, dignity and seriousness that it deserves. The sooner it's out there, the sooner Franklin's rehabilitation can begin, because the public will be 1000% behind his return to health. It would also assuage the concerns of the public about whatever his affliction is, given he is in the public spotlight. The longer 'mental health issues' are used as the reason, the sooner people will want to know what the actual issue is.

On the other hand, if it were the latter then I understand why it would be referred to under a more general description, for more 'political' reasons.

I've got a feeling the Swans will be quite transparent on this one as they see fit. One, as they get more information and two, as they deem acceptable to release it.

Certainly seems as though Buddy has some health issues that have been kept from the public for some time and we should all be ok with that, he's entitled to his privacy, despite what the media thinks.

Mental health pretty much covers everything, any illness that a person has can fall under the "mental illness" umbrella if they aren't coping with it.

This is why I hate and wont watch the news, there's something going on with the lad, it's his business and his employers, the rest of the world should respect that and not dig around trying to be the big story breaker for credit and financial gain.

I think when the police start arresting people it becomes public interest. Otherwise, yes

I just hope 'mental health issues' is not being used as a cover all.
As someone closely related to people who have had rehab and who also has dealt with family with mental health issues, I wish him all the best in his recovery. Whatever it is, it is not easy.

Probably a case of he has now does have mental health issues which have come from previous life style choices.

If I had to pick one it would be hogan for mine. Has kicked more goals in his first year than basically anyone you can name in the last 20 years, and that's being the number one forward in a crap team.

Still find it interesting that his little driving incident didnt get more air time. Wonder what the police tox reports were, it all got swept under the carpet by Sydney and the AFL pretty quickly
