Pretty simple really:

Each team plays one game = 9 rounds
Each finals team from previous year plays 2 games against other finalists from previous year = 8 rounds
Remaining 5-6 rounds can be for the supposed big Victorian games.

Unfortunately it's not that simple though, when you are asking a TV station to fork out 1.5 billion dollars.

100% agree.

Maybe they could make the fixture flexible mid season?

Would be hard from a logistical point of view but it would maximise ratings and attendances if the best teams were playing Friday.

16k for a Carlton game really is an indictment. If they get 60+ between two big Melbourne clubs surely that means they should get 30 odd for a game like this.

Makes you wonder why the Melbourne media doesn't highlight it more. They sure got stuck into port and their tarps.

The Melbourne media are absolutely giving it to Carlton, most of their radio programs spend the majority of the day discussing it.

wont happen unfortunately, especially given the clubs voted down the 17-5 proposal for 2017 onwards

True, but then why come out and say you'll get Friday night games if you improve you performances and then give so many games to teams would have been rated as mid-range teams at best?

Yeah. I guess that means getting 3 instead of none, but the big vic teams still get 7

every team plays each other once

then the clubs are broken into 3 groups of 6 and again each team plays the opposition in its group once

1 - 6 - playing for final spots

7 - 12 - playing for 7th and 8th

13 - 18 - playing for draft picks

Probably 5 for the bigger Vic teams, extra say 6 games would be two games each for the biggest 6 clubs, and this is presuming they made the finals the previous year. It they didn't, say Collingwood from last year, then they would get 3 for the year.

Ok thanks for that.

Yeah I guess they voted it down on he basis that they couldn't play the biggest games twice every year.

In terms of the draw now, I think it is about as good as you can make a compromised draw (where clubs play other clubs around them more often)

They were hanmered about their crowds and membership. They were ridiculed for having to give away 2 for 1 tix last weekend by nearly all of the radio stations and media

Well it sounds deserved. They are a basket case at the moment (and you could arguably throw in Richmond Essendon and Melbourne into that category too)

It got voted down because there are that many flaws in the system. The biggest flaw is that 13-18 play for picks with the highest placed getting the higher pick, the teams are at the bottom because they are crap, they need the help. If you finish 18th you deserve a better pick

Those games would be less relevant than they are now, which would hurt the comp even more.

The AFL don't want people to have choice, despite the number of games on a Saturday they are generally staggered apart from the two night games that generally start around the same time as each other.
I'm gathering that they'd prefer to hit a wider audience as most people that are out would tend to watch one game or the other whereas on a Friday night they are more likely to spend the evening at home watching the footy regardless of who's playing.
Maybe we should start boycotting watching the mediocre Victorian games on Friday nights.
