Just heard that Richie passed away over night or early this morning.

McGillvray and now Benaud, my voices of summer

The Central Commentary position upstairs is looking pretty good.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

One of the few times I will ever shed a tear.

I was born in '75, I've never, ever ( until this summer ) known cricket without Richie.

I've never, ever ( until this summer ) had a summer without Richie in my lounge room. I have not missed the first ball of any Australian home Test series since 1982, Richie was there with me,with us, for every one of them.

R.I.P Richie. The cricketing world on field was enhanced by your presence, the cricketing world off field and on camera is what it is today because of your presence.

Very sad day.

I've only ever shed tears for a few cricketers, and I'm proud to say that Richie is one of them.

I'm absolutely devastated.

At 84 it was a good knock from Richie. Surely his narration of The life of Phil Hughes takes on more signicance now as it was probably his final cricketing act?

just listening to some pieces of Richie's work, really shows how great as a commentator he really was.

So many great quotes, so dry and witty.
My favourite would have to be his comment after a batsmen copped one in the plums,
"Take away the pain, leave the swelling..."

RIP Richie

My favourite piece was when an Aussie bowler hurled a ball back at the keeper but it hit the batsmen on the foot.

Other commentator says what a shocking throw that was

Richie replies in that distinct voice, 'Or was it'

I'm with you Booney, 1975 and all!!

Really is a numb feeling thinking about this. Cricket commentary will never be the same in this country. Unmistakable voice, universally respected. With all he has done in the commentary box it's easy to forget just how good a player he was, and how good he was as captain. The words 'legend' and 'icon' get thrown around a lot these days but no one will argue that Richie Benaud is just that.

The loss of a great man who did not quite bring up his ton but his 84 was one of the most important for Australian cricket. RIP, Richie.

An icon lost, not much more I can say, about 6 years ago before an Adelaide test we were hanging out behind the old Bradman stand and Richie walked past our group, when we made eye contact he simply said "Morning Fellas" and walked on towards the stand. He didn't need to say anything but it was awesome he did and blew us all away.

On reflection it was great that he could work on TV into his 80's and he did not have a prolonged illness, something I suspect he would have hated.
