Great Ocean Road
Who has done it?
Do's? Dont's? must sees? etc
We are looking at staying in Mt Gambier night 1, Pt Campbell night 2 then Torquay night 3 before hitting melbourne. So only 3 hours driving each day which will allow plenty of time to stop off and see some sights along the way

Do it ... Port Fairy, Lorne, Apollo Bay, Torquay, all good spots.
Dunno, I’m just an idiot.

Re: Great Ocean Road
I quite enjoyed Portland
is a nice drive, hopefully the roadworks have all ceased by now, as it can be quite painful on the Great Ocean Rd
12 apostles is a good spot for a stop and an even helicopter ride!

Re: Great Ocean Road
I did it 5 years ago, and I really wish I'd taken my time.
Anglesea, Lorne, Apollo Bay, Torquay, Port Campbell, Twelve Apsotles, Loch Ard Gorge, The Grotto, Bay of Islands, Portland, Cape Patton and Cape Otway are all great spots.
Whether you take a day, a week, or a month, you'll love it.

Re: Great Ocean Road
did it 6 or 7 yrs ago
drove to Stawell for 1 night
ballarat for 3 nights
from ballarat drove down to Geelong and the G.O.R - did the 12 Apostles. stopped off for a break at a Lighthouse and I joked to the now Mrs that it is the lighthouse from Round the Twist - and as it turned out, it was.
did a chopper ride over the 12 Apostles
stayed in Warrnambool for 1 night
cosy drive into Mt Gambier for 3 nights
Ballarat, Warrnambool, Mt Gambier accommodation was all done through the Travel Auctions

Re: Great Ocean Road
I don't think there are any negatives to it! Do it, as stated above, take your time and enjoy having a beer at the various pubs scattered along the way.
It's magnificent, you'll love it.
Oh, yes, one negative, some of the accommodation along the way can be pricey.

Re: Great Ocean Road
Doing it for the first time in April (Anzac day weekend).
Going, Adelaide - Torquay (2 nights) - Apollo Bay (1 night) - Warrnambool (1 night) - Adelaide. Looking forward to taking our time with short drives each day from Torquay to Warrnambool.
Accommodation set us back $880 for the 4 nights, but also staying in nice accommodation.

Re: Great Ocean Road
We did it in 2013, take your time as everyone has said, there are a heap of places to stop, we did Warnambool to Lorne and it took us the whole day. Great part of the country.
We then continued on and took the ferry over to Mornington and then onto Phillip Island, avoided Melbourne altogether.

Re: Great Ocean Road
cheers for the info, im really looking forward to it. I have a 6 month old so we will only be doing 3 hours of driving a day so will have plenty of stops and time to look around each place. Then planning on getting into our accomodation with enough time to look around the town and find a nice place to have dinner. Staying outside of melbourne with friends and only heading in to watch the crows game on the saturday then home via Horsham on the sunday. I still think the best thing about Melbourne is the road out

Re: Great Ocean Road
I've done it twice.
First time did in non-stop took 16hrs
Second time did it over 2 days staying in Mount Gambier for a night
Highlights
Pt. Fairy for an ice cream
Bells Beach
The sink 'blowhole'
Lorne for a Chicken Parmy
Enjoy make sure your tyres are in good nick it can get winding at high speeds.

Re: Great Ocean Road
We've just booked our stays, Mt Gambier, Princetown and Anglesea. Now just need to plan a few stops along the way. We travel between 2.5-3 hours each day after Mt Gambier so plenty of time to stop at places along the way.
WLF, yep got a 2012 Subaru Forester with new tyres so should be right for all the road conditions.

We do it every football season on the way home from a Port game in Melbourne.
Most people here have it spot on. Love Port Campbell hooked the biggest 'something ever off the jetty' before being snapped off after fighting it for the best part of an hour. Apollo bay has the best Pizza you will ever have! Seriously the best pizza ever its a Must.
Bells beach is seriously overrated, There are far better beaches the whole stretch of road. We pretty much stop at all the attractions its amazing from year to year how they change.
In Portland go down to the boat ramp and look at the size of the sea lions eating all the Tuna scraps of the fillet boards there absolutely huge!
you've gota keep on keep'n on .........

Wye Beach Hotel did a good feed a few years back when I went along there. Great view over the surf break so you can watch the surfers go about their business.
