In my opinion at the point in time. You'd have to say that Steve Smith is the most consistent batsman in the lineup atm. Very talented batsman and he will be representing Australia for a very long time. Even could be the next captain. What do you all think?

Certainly is on top of his game in all three forms right now, hopefully he continues. What makes him so dangerous is he is unpredicable, those baseball hits down the ground and full tilt followed by delicate shots off the middle of the bat to the 3rd man boundary.

Have to laugh in a sense that many many on here including myself stated a couple of years ago how hopeless he was and should not be selected. He obviously read what was on here and has addressed those issues ;) and I still rate him as a shock bowler, bowls a pretty good ball

I just think he must have gone back to basics, adjusted his technique and now every time he goes in bat. You could almost count on him to make a ton or at least a decent score. I enjoy watching him play and you could almost say he is a replica of Steve Waugh.

Would you declare now and try and get 5-20 overs tonight at the Indians on a damp wicket

Or will the risk of the Indians taking light be to high so Aus might as well keep batting until you can't see the ball anymore

Come on skipper
14 more to the one of the greatest tons ever

Unsure about greatest ton ever

Fair credit he has gone through hell and back but tbh it's on the world best batting paradise and against a pop gun para districts div5 attack, most emotional ton most defiantly but greatest ton ever mmmmmm

You are under estimating the mental application to batting in Test Match cricket. Given his injury, lack of preparation and his personal problems it is up there as one of the best knocks in his career.

Same goes to David Warner, sounds like he was all at sea just a few days ago and what ever his missus and/or coaches/psychologist said to him must get credit.

My point is it's arguably not even the best ton in this test match never mind the history of the game

My point, given ALL the circumstances one of the very best Test hundreds

Keep batting
If the Indians bat well and get close to a declared total , we might be batting last
If this pitch turns into a 5th day Houghler the Indians could be box seating

No such thing as offering light to players anymore, they just make the call

With Smith it's not like he's in a rich vein of form, he just gets better and better and from where he was 4-5 years ago he has improved beyond belief. He reminds of me of Steve Waugh and I genuinely think he can be better than him too. Warner has the ability to become one of Australia's all time greatest openers. I'd kill to see him face Ambrose, Akram, Murali and even Shane Bond in peak form because he bleeds talent and I reckon he'd stand up to them all.
Can you bring a man to his feet when defeat is on repeat?

What are the comparisons between Steve Smith and Steve Waugh being based on? The improvement in their game and first name or something else? I'm not being critical just genuinely curious as Steve Waugh is one of my favourite all time players.

Agree, two completely different style batsmen

In all seriousness I can't think of any with a technique like Smith, he is extremely original.

Could he make the jump to number 3 in our batting order

centuries after 23 tests
S Waugh 0
S Smith 5

If Smith turns out to be anywhere near as good as Waugh it means that we should be competitive for a long while.

My comparison between the two would be the fact that they both are extremely consistent in the way they continually make runs. The way they both show patience and they both have very unique techniques. They can win the game off their own bat and can rescue Australia out of any bad circumstances. And obviously they both come in at No. 5.
