St Vincent's Hospital spokesman David Faktor said Hughes was on life support.
"He underwent a set of scans to establish the extent of his injuries and then a decision was made to perform surgery," he said.
"He arrived in a critical condition and remains in a critical condition. He is undergoing surgery as we speak.
"I understand they intubated ( tracheal intubation ) him at the scene. He is the best of hands and surrounded by a leading team."
Mr Faktor said he's family was by his side.
"He's got loved ones here at the hospital," he said.

Was just asking the question, as horrible as the injury was there are still points to play for in the Shield and id hope they replayed the game at a later stage as to not disadvantage SA or NSW.

Just on Helmet design, today's incident is something I've been wary of for years. The back of Masuri helmets appear to sit quite hight on the back of the head compared to Albion helmets, especially the late 90s/early 2000s Albion helmets. Every since I've seen a Masuri helmet after watching years and years of the Aussies in the Albion helmets I thought imagine if someone was to get hit in the back of the lower head because the helmet looked to sit higher on the head than what I was used to seeing. Don't know if anyone else has thought this before or how many times it's happened but looks like today was one of them.

Like NRL, Aussie Rules and NFL I reckon the helmet has brought in a false level of confidence. Back in the old days, blokes learnt to play the hook shot without helmets and HAD to be confident otherwise they'd get hurt (Hookes, McCosker). If they weren't confident they'd duck out the way. These days, with helmets I don't think you have to be very confident to have a go at one. I'm not for a second saying that helmets should be banned but players still need to realise they can get hurt.

To say the bouncer needs to be taken out the game is ridiculous. I think those people must've been watching "The Sanitisation of Cricket" (read as 20/20). It's a lethal weapon and should be respected as such.

Terrible injury to Hughes. I never wore a lid. Wasn't good enough to face real pace but copped 11 stitches from a top edge into my face from a spinner in the nets. It can be a dangerous sport but here's to a full recovery to Hughes.

Bloody terrible news. I only saw the ticker at the bottom of the screen on the ABC about a Hughes being in critical condition following brain surgery and thought it might be Merv I never thought Phil. I feel crook reading over the posts in this thread the poor bloke.

Hopefully he's able to get back to some sort of normality after this.

Very unfortunate and hopefully the lad gets through this. I guess everyone knows the risks with a ball that hard travelling as fast as it does but it gets easy to forget until something serious happens. I think it's a great move to abandon the game. They can always think of scheduling again later on but I doubt many players are in the right frame of mind.

All Shield games now called off. From what I read the Queensland v Tasmania game had bloke in tears after play. As Queensland were in the field most of the day they found out via the opposition and media at the ground.

That last part was tweeted by the ABC and now they're in hot water because of it.

They didn't know ANYTHING about his condition, so they used that line to get people to read their coverage.

I think there's a lot of hysteria about that Tweet.
They asked a question, they were given a response.
How is it any different to posting images of the incident? If anything, it was further highlighting the seriousness of the situation.
There was a lot of supposition etc going on from all who were Tweeting about this horrible situation.
If this was a car accident or a siege (just think of some of the stuff reported during the Clavell siege) and a media organisation reported that, there'd be no concerns.
Furthermore, how is having other media gloating about it and writing faux outrage pieces in response any better?
