Zones in football
Plenty of talk recently about having zones in the AFL...
Are they actually taking the p*ss with this? Or is someone actually a fan of it?
IMO if this happens it will be a disgrace!!!

Re: Zones in football
Surely not is all I will say.
The game is not in that bad a state that we need to confine players to certain parts of the ground.

Re: Zones in football
Firstly, I hope and expect it won't happen.
Secondly, if by chance it did, the 50m arc at each end is already in place. One player from each team within that zone at all times. It's not hard.
Finally, the game constantly evolves, typically quicker than significant rule changes can take effect and if the likes of Port and Geelong keep playing the quick transition game style that we do then opposition teams will leave players back, "naturally" removing the need for player zones.
One thing for sure though, 36 players at one end of the field looks shit......but that allows quick transfer of play and easy goals. So coaches leave players back....etc etc.

Re: Zones in football
Would it seriously make that much difference? Thinking it was something like netball:
Mids/Ruck/Wings could travel anywhere on the ground
Full Forward, Forward Pockets couldn't go past CHF
Full Back, Back Pockets couldnt go past CHB
Centre Half Forward line could travel anywhere from Goal Line to CHB line
Centre Half Back line could travel anywhere from Goal Line to CHF line
Don't think that is a great deal different to now..

How are you going to police that? Umpires are gonna have to know who's playing what position at all times. Hmmm....how about BIBS with some sort of positional coding on them....

Dunno, maybe give forwards those wrist bands like 9 a side?
I'm not saying I support the zones

Would love to see that, a turn over on half back, full forward starts to lead and then has to stop all of a sudden cause he hits the 50m arc.
Or, the ball is kicked forward to him and it doesn't quite make it into the 50, and he's standing there leaning over trying to reach the ball. Could be quite comical.

The number of players per zone would have to be the model, rather than certain players in certain spots.
Danny Southern telling Plugga he's fat, I'd like to see that!

Re: Zones in football
Better than the current $hit football with 36 blokes in the corner of an oval
The coaches might think it works but I cant believe how many times a player looks up at HBF and there's no-one to kick to, so kicks across the ground.

I dont see what was wrong with the game in the first place...
They reckon crowds are down because of the cost of going to the footy...that is one part of it. There are many other reasons in my opinion.
The constant changing of rules for the sake of changing them (and keeping peoples mates in a job at the AFL).
The MRP is another big one. If Yarran gets off, Schultz should be let off too.
The fans are these idiots cash cows. Surely anyone would realise the happier you keep them, the more money you will make. They have rested on the fact the game was huge when the current, and previous administration came into power.
Let me take over, it'd be the best sport in the world again, coz I'd grab a copy of the 1999 rule book, and say "Here, play this game." Fixed.

Re: Zones in football
I agree, don't change it.
If they introduce zones, where does it end - reduced players per side, no contact, only one bounce allowed?

Was I the only one disappointed to find that this was about positional zones & not about bringing in player recruitment zones?

Re: Zones in football
Loved Paul Roos view on this
Paraphrasing he said
'The rules commission just go and make rules and if the rule doesn't work rather than revert back to the old rule they just make rules on rules on rules to fix the original change'
'Also said he would be happy for zones to come in provided the change the name of the sport that the AFL plays'

Re: Zones in football
yep, the new sport that will run in competition to the new Zone Ball - that we currently know as AFL will be taken on by a new revolutionary sport that was first played 150yrs ago, and the creators of this competition will use rules pre-1990ish

Yeah a super league will come along and play by the 1990's. rules the new comp will be likened to the UFC of Aussies Rules but will have crowds streaming through the gates.
In the meanwhile the AFL premiership will become as relevant as the heavy weight boxing world title is currently

all the current stars of the AFL - zoneball comp will do a Hamilton-Smith and defect to the opposition

Re: Zones in football
I would like to see a Nab Cup where they bring back the rules as per they were in 95 (keep tribunal incidents as they currently are) and reward holding the ball properly, pay obvious frees as per the rule book and ball up as soon as there is a scrummage to prevent injuries with extra's coming in.
Who knows we may see more free's for blokes who want the pill and reward the first bloke to the ball.
Put coin on it that the crowds will come back too.

Re: Zones in football
What would be interesting is restricting the amount of players in the forward half rather than ensuring you had players in there.
To qualify this i dont think it necessary to makr changes for the sake of it and my inital thought was instantly toward netball and the way our game is heading... 'contact full forward' im sure Luke Darcy would be fine considering he did commentate the netball for a while... I digress
However just Imagine last night in the dying seconds if both teams could only have say 10 players in the defensive 50 rather than the whole side parked in there...
Policing would be difficult of course but it would open up play a touch and might have allowed Carlton a chance to get a score...
As it was there was never going to be an effective shot on goal due to the amount of bodies in there.
