BUT
Will be 34 at the start of next season
Wont be as big a loss in the SS as some might think
Has been an abject failure far too many times in away games the last 2 seasons
A couple of big scores on King William Road last season have disguised his many batting failures of recent times

We all know King William Road scores don't count as it is a road. Adelaide oval is actually located on War Memorial drive ;)

Maxy has teed off at SACA management from his winter home in Gloucestershire....claims he was pushed out rather than poached by WA.

Told he was no longer guaranteed a spot in the Shield side.

Michael Klinger has revealed he was pushed out by South Australia rather than poached by Western Australia, in the wake of his shock departure from the Redbacks setup.

Klinger was told by the SACA he was no longer one of their first-choice Bupa Sheffield Shield batsman and they would be favouring young pair Travis Head and Kelvin Smith instead.

The news came as a brutal shock to the right-handed opener who still has Australian ODI aspirations.

"I was disappointed and disagreed with the feedback I received. Two Shield games ago I scored a double-ton for South Australia," Klinger told The Advertiser from Gloucestershire, where he is currently captaining the county side.

"Without sounding arrogant, I feel I am too good a player to not play a full season of Shield cricket," he said.

"I still have ambitions to play one-day cricket for Australia in the 2015 World Cup but if you are not playing Shield cricket you are out of people's minds."

It was earlier thought that the Alcohol. Think Again Western Warriors had lured the 33-year-old with a two-year contract, keen to fill the hole left by reigning Bupa Sheffield Shield player of the year Marcus North, but Klinger refuted this.

"It was not a contract or money issue.

"The two years over one from WA helped, but I only had a guaranteed opportunity to play first-class cricket in one place,"said Klinger

"The hardest thing is leaving my team-mates. SA will have success soon and to not be part of that hurts a lot."

The former skipper has led the Redbacks to two limited-overs titles and averaged 45 at first-class level since moving to South Australia.

"It has been a pretty emotional couple of sleepless nights for us. The decision was taking a toll," said Klinger, who will move to Perth with his wife and two young children.

"I was getting a lot of love from Justin Langer, saying I would help their young players and help as a leader for WA."

Pretty rough to be told at the end of the season that you are no longer the first choice. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me to be honest. Why not wait till the start of the season to see what sort of form each is in etc?

Even rougher that the player is a former captain that guided them to 2 trophies in separate competitions, then cast aside to lure an overseas player to the team. Then to be told that. No wonder he has decided head west.

surely kelvin smith isnt ready to play a full season of shield yet? he would have been putting a ton of pressure on klinger thats for sure, but as klinger said, he doubled up not more than a few weeks ago.

and with hughes and possibly ferg and cooper and even klinger factoring in possible national team calculations, and also injuries, im sure smith would have gotten a few games anyway, just as he has this year.

extremely poor decision once again by SACA management.

(just on your botha comment though heater i think that is a success imo. but i agree with the rest of your sentiment)

But the need to strip a competent leader of his duty to get a recruit across the line? Not knocking the job Botha has done but it is bit of a slap in the face of the former captain.

Jamie Cox strike again. First he creates the 'premier league' which no player cares about to justify his job and now tells a quality FC player he isnt required minimalising our depth which was needed for us to have a tilt at the shield. They obvioulsy think in the offseason Kelv will develop and be ready to step in pending Raph not cementing his spot and or Hughes on Aus duties

So the side would look like:

Cosgrove
Hughes/Raph/Kelv
Head
Cooper
Furg
McDonald
Botha
Ludeman
Richardson
Sayers
Putland

We basically are no stronger than we were this year. If McDonald plays we will be better off from a team structure point of view

I'm devastated! Klinger has become one of my favourite players over the past few seasons and with Cossie and Head committing I thought we were a real chance to push for the SS next season!

McDonald surely has to be under the pump next year, more pressure will sit on his shoulders to perform with both bat and ball now as well.

interesting that everyone has basically ignored mals stats and have just bagged the SACA for letting him go, and him wanting to go when he has been told he isnt confirmed to be in our best xi.

when travis head was rumoured to be leaving as he mightnt have been seen in our best xi everyone wanted to have a dig at head for not sticking it out and improving.

i have had o bigger look at the stats over teh last 2 seasons and klinger is 8th on the first class averages, behind players like head and brown - even mennie.

so overall if it was a choice between keeping klinger and not getting cossie or losing head then i think we have made the right decsion.

i also think klinger has made the right decsision for his future too lock in 2 more years, a poor year next year couldve finished his career
