Massie in for Jericho, good decision IMO, saw Massie 2 weeks ago against the Bays and is cherry ripe for the AFL again and a better option than Jericho...just hope they dont take DOugy up as the travelling emergency (any news here?)

Crows fly without Goodwin

June 15, 2007 ADEALIDE on-baller Simon Goodwin has been withdrawn from the Crows side to face the Kangaroos on the Gold Coast tomorrow night.

Goodwin was named in the side but has not recovered from a sprained medial ligament in his left knee, the Crows said thsi morning.

The prolific possession winner will be replaced by either Luke Jericho or Bernie Vince, with both players among a squad of 23 travelling to the Gold Coast today.

Last night when I saw that Goodwin had been named my first reaction was pfffffft - followed by a rant about why would we be playin ducks and drakes with this as the emergencies named were not exactly first picked players.

Then I thought maybe we are going to take that extra tall that I am crying out for us to try something new - so I gave mummbles the benefit of the doubt last night.

Now I read that we are only taking Vince and Jericho as Goodwin is not ready

if the Gold Coast Roos are serious they should be winning tomorrow night.

the Roos are in form, the crows are out of sorts.

wont be high scoring as the crows will get the numbers behind the ball.

OK Dutchy, a more detailed response.

Crows will win by 4 goals and here's why. Corey Jones, Brent Harvey and Shannon Grant are the 3 danger men for the Roos, and I think we have logical match-ups for each of them. Bassett will take Jones, Torney on Harvey and Johncock/McLeod on Grant. The Roos are short of gun tall key forwards, so Rutten will be able to help out the other defenders as he won't have to pay too much attention to his direct opponent.

Thompson, Edwards, Knights, Shirley and co are all big ball-winners, especially the first 3, and they will win first use of the ball more often than not from the stoppages. After being kept quiet for 2 weeks running, Welsh will need to produce something with that performance based contract hanging over his head. Expect a big one from him.

I expect a free flowing game of football and the run from Johncock, McLeod and Torney will prove vital to the Crows victory.

The Kangaroos have had a good run in recent weeks but the scalps have been Brisbane, Carlton, Sydney, Essendon, Melbourne and St Kilda. Not trying to minimise what they have acheived to get to 7-4 but when they came up against West Coast it was an 11 goal thrashing while the Eagles weren't at their peak.

The Crows have a very similar story to tell with our 6-5 record.

In the last 3 weeks the Kangaroos have kicked 7, 10 and 11 goals again about the same scoring rate as the Crows.

So, honestly, I can't split them. Neutral ground (sort of), similar records. Maybe the one thing in Kangaroos' favour is their better winning record in recent weeks. The one thing in Crows' favour is that it's arguably a more important game for us to get to the bye at 7-5.

Should be a good game ... people will laugh but I am expecting a more open game.

the EAGLES may not have been at their peak when they smashed the kangas by 11 goals, but they did have the home ground advantage and there will be other teams that will lose to the Eagles in the same manner.

at least the KANGAS bounced back last week.

but as DUTCHY or MAL mentioned earlier in the year that its the 2nd week after playing in perth that teams struggle.............

My thoughts

Both the Hawks and Blues showed tonight that one week in footy is a very very long time.

Firstly the Kanga's... I watched the entire game earlier in the week on Fox, even though they got the points, it's a difficult trying to draw a line on through their form, based on that performance.

The reason I say this, the Saints were totally dis-functional and Bloody ordinary, and I was left wondering, did the Kanga's fail to put the Saints to the sword.....

The Crows form last week, they were persistent against the Cats but hit the wall, some might say unlucky, but that's footy

On Wells, even though he is named, I don't believe he will play, last week he was "no chance", and earlier this week it was reported that Wells still had not completed any competitive training, or football drills that required side ways movement, with the timing of the mid season break, I do not believe they will risk him...

Key Players - Kanga's

Harvey, I still remember this bloke wearing the Big V, for me Harvey is the Kanga's Barometer, last week Craigy made the error in starting Torney on Ablett, hopefully the coach will not do the same this week, Harvey will smash Torney for leg speed, Massie or Van Berlo would be wiser options.

Jones, keeps kicking his 3-4 goals each week, difficult to match up on, can play tall and covers the ground like a mid size player, my preference is Mattner, Marty is the same height, only gives away 2kg's, will match Jones over the ground and most importantly will give Jones something to think about the other way, Massie is another likely option.

McIntosh, this Bloke is the next big thing in terms of Ruckman, he is still 22 and plays with maturity beyond his years, Hudson and Griffen need to ensure he does not push forward uncontested

Wells, if he plays, Macca go head to head, it has worked in the past for the crows, so why change

Grant, not in sparkling form but still needs to be watched closely, plenty of options with this match up, but Torney, would be my first option.

Others, Simpson, Sinclair, Harris, Swallow, Smith, I would encourage the Crows to back themselves and take them on........

Key Players Crows

Thompson, Probably leading the Crows B&F at present, I suspect Laidley will give Rawlings the job.

Johncock, I believe Stiffy will be very important for the crows up forward, Pratt will probably get the Job here.

Forward Structure, Petrie on Bock, Brown on Mcgregor, Spud on Roo and Archer on Welsh, the outcome of these match ups may determine the contest.

Style

I am not a fan of one way shoot out footy, but I do expect the crows to play a more attacking style of footy, that is attack and hunt the opposition when you don't have the footy, and run, break lines, create and take risks when you have possession of the footy, it is the latter where the Crows need to do a lot better
