Totally agree with you Graham. It seems to be the aussie way, earn more money for working less.Grahaml wrote:If you don't think there are a lot of guys these days electing to play non league footy who are good enough then you know nothing. Blokes who have gone far enough for you to hear of them turned down bigger money many years earlier. The issue is the 17-20 year olds who aren't in line for AFL selection. The blokes who used to do a year or two playing reserves getting better before beginning a league career. Straight out of under 18s footy they are being thrown numbers like $800 a game. To train less. And get pissed after the games. With their mates.

That has been happening since country leagues started paying players in the 60's. There will always be guys who are good enough but would rather just play & party with their mates.
The main problem I see is players having to train 5 nights a week only to then play reserves for $50 or whatever the match fee is. Those are the guys who will say stuff it, I can play in the amateurs or country leagues for $800 - $1000 a game & only train 2 nights.

Only problem is that the AFL will have no problem with this as, it is keeping the SANFL as a feeder comp.
Exactly the conversation I had over Christmas.

I bet it goes back even further than that. You hear a lot of stories around the traps from the early days of blokes earning bigger dollars comparatively they they get now even. The issue is the rate blokes are leaving. There's no doubt in my mind that it's been a bigger issue the last decade than any decade before. The money to leave keeps rising, the desire to play half assed keeps rising and the lustre of league footy keeps fading. Unless we find a solution to one or more of those issues, it'll only get worse.

There will never be a cap, been tried before and can't be policed.
The CFB has to admit that their points system is the cause of the inflated payments before anything will change.
League clubs are quite happy to recruit country footballers but when it goes the other way they squeal like a stuck pig, same goes for SAAFL clubs
What amounts are you talking that are amazing?
I know that it is impossible to cap, but it doesn`t make it right though. Does it?
Of course League clubs will be happy recruiting players from the country just as a player would like to be recruited. Why wouldn`t a player want to further he`s career in a class above and then maybe move up to the top class i.e AFL if good enough..
The simple fact is that the Country league is paying way over, and the SANFL are helpless in stopping it.
I know of a few ex SANFL players recieving payments in the $600 > $1400 a game region.
I will not name the players, but I can assure you, this is no lie.
As I posted previously, some (NOT) all of these players would still have a lot to offer in our comp, but are being lured away by buckets of goodies.
There also used to be some prestige and a higher status in playing League football, not anymore thanks to your club (and 5 others)
Why is it wrong for country clubs to pay what they can afford (or even what they can't)?
Perhaps the SANFL clubs should look at how they operate.
Get rid of the reserves. Don't pay anyone under the age of 20 (as u said sell them the AFL dream)
Don't pay so much to interstate ex AFL recruits so that there is more to go around to retain local stars.
Of course country clubs will be happy recruiting players from the city just as a player would like to be recruited. Why wouldnt a player want to train less, get paid more and set up his family, pay the mortgage, buy a boat etc etc
I believe your figures on payments would be quite accurate
Would you like no salary cap in the SANFL? Just like the Country.
I don`t mind the idea of no reserve, but does that mean we reduce admin prices at games considering 1 less game on the day?
Funny how you say don`t pay so much to interstate and ex afl players when your club has done very well out of them over the last 10 > 15 years.
I don`t blame the players for chasing the big bucks, but it does concern me that the SANFL is gradually dropping in standard and I am worried about it.
ARE YOU?

Re: Rumours and Player Movement Discussions for 2014
No im not worried about it, the clubs made their own bed letting the Crows in.
I think no salary cap in the SANFL would be great. AFL would disagree though and there's also the small problem of half the clubs struggling to pay the current salary cap
Country clubs have already been faced with the scenario of do we pay the big bucks to an import or start paying a talented local who gets chased by other country clubs.
Why does it matter if the standard of the SANFL drops? You still follow your club, you will still celebrate a premiership. Infact if the standard drops alot the Crows might faaark off

I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you, but you've made two pretty broad statements, without actually putting any facts behind them.
"Recruiting underwelming." "More minuses than pluses."
What are the facts as you see them to make those broad statements?

Half a bit of footy knowledge and being able to read the Ins and Outs topic?
But yes I do know the point you're trying to make and North as an example seemed to go backwards hugely at the beginning of the season in regard to talent coming and going and ended up one week later into the finals than the previous year.

We all have different knowledge of situations and different opinions. I'm interested in what's led to those opinions and for Dutchy to specifically talk about Centrals.

Yeah I know and I already answered that. I'm pretty sure most unbiased people with half a bit of knowledge would agree with Dutchys assessment, possibly even some less biased Dogs fans too that don't just adhere to the company line.
I have no knowledge though and sit on the fence with an arse cheek firmly clenched on each side.
I thought I'd take JKs spot up here since he fell off a few weeks back.

Personally on appearances only I think only 1 - 3 sides look improved but as I said before and using North as an example from 2012 to 2013, looks can be deceiving. Glenelgs the only definite improvement so far IMHO.

As would Dogs fans watching their team go backwards on the ladder in two finals in a row thanks to another club from the North pounding the crap out of them.
