1960
NA 14-11
NW 13-12

There was an opinion going around that NW were deprived of a free kick late in the game, that could have turned the game
This has been refuted by other opinions
There is a 1960s thread in the History room detailing that game

Yes, in either Red and Blue Blooded or Men of Norwood Alan Killagrew is quoted as saying that Bill Wedding was held without the ball 30 yards from goal with less than a minute to play. I was at the game, I don't remember the incident but I do have a copy of the audio of the last quarter (I need to get a life) and after Norwood kick the last goal of the game to get within 5 points the last 5 minutes of the game are played completely in North's forward lines. Haydn Bunton was clearing from deep in defence as the siren rang, so either Wedding was held 150 metres off the ball, and remember there was only one umpire then or Killa's memory failed him.

It's not the first time a losing side has tried to rewrite history with respect to a Grand Final.

From everything I've heard, Bill might have been 20 metres too far from goal to convert anyway lol

You could be right. Bill was a wonderful knock ruckman but he certainly wasn't a good mark or kick. I digress completely but a player like Bill would probably not even be considered at SANFL level these days, but I don't think I have seen a better knock ruckman. He was instrumental in SA's memorable win over the Vics at the MCG in 1963.

GrandOldFlag wrote:This is the GF the SANFL needed. Two traditional clubs with big supporter bases. Lets not talk of 30-35,000 crowds, it will be 35-40,000 given last year we got 29,300. This year neutrals will also want to attend.

North can dish up anything and their best is brilliant and they can score goals very quickly. We will have to be at our best to win and also kick a high enough score ourselves, something that has not been needed against West.

Great post, GrandOldFlag. There should be close to 40,000 at this game. You would never know it from the media but it is the second and third most successful SANFL clubs playing against each other. In fact as a kid in the early sixties Norwood vs North was always considered the second most important clash of the season behind Port vs Norwood.

I reiterate that I wish the media would realise the rivalry of these two clubs and promote the Grand Final as it should be promoted.

I reckon North are right in this, until the secret MONSFAW gets released and then Norwood go berserk.

I am looking forward to the game though.

They should be promoting it regardless of whoever is playing. But you will hear next to nothing from them all week with maybe a one pager on each of Friday and Saturday. Instead we will hear more about what Hawthorn are doing post GF and then some hypothetical AFL trades.

Seriously, I can't think of too many other events occurring this weekend that will draw 30,000+. The interest is there so maybe the editors of the Advertiser should get off there butts and actually write something the people want to read rather then telling us was we should be reading.

For the sake of how the game should be played, I hope North win. Norwood and West have done enough to kill enjoyment in the SANFL over the last few years with the introduction of super-boring football. As inevitable as this style of play was, I hope North win for the good guys and Bassett and Collins are forever destined to be cogs in an AFL machine.

I know, I know, if you wear red and blue you don't care as long as you win, but please, let the Roosters rise up!

I think it will be a cracker (thank God North won)
I will be watching Dalwood v Warren - two great blokes
At least Dags will have an opponent that plays in the forward lines this week.........................

Norwood vs North Grand Final has a nice ring to it. Sort of like a SANFL Grand Final from the days of yore.
With it being 53 years since they last played each other in a Grand Final makes me wonder what other combinations we haven't seen for so many years.
South vs Central or Eagles (maybe Glenelg or even Sturt) has obviously never happened. But of sides that have played each other at least once in a Grand Final, which combination hasn't occurred for the longest time?
Possibly Port vs West? I think I read about them playing a Grand Final in front of a massive crowd in the 30's (a reminder of the rich history of the SANFL: Westies once had a following to be reckoned with). If that was the last time it'd be a 73 year gap at least.

Anyway, back on topic. Norwood vs North Grand Final is a suitable farewell to the SANFL as it still stands. I hope it gets over 35,000 or even 40,000. Our final statement that we are so much more than Power and Crows. Two very typical SANFL sides who've survived through thick and thin for more than a hundred years and the many thousands who follow them.
Let's hope for an all time cracker.
I think it'll be North by less than a goal in a classic boilover.
I'm gonna sit back, crack the top off a Pale Ale, and watch the Double Blues prevail

Their,
I have a feeling that Port and West played in five grand finals in the 50's/60's

Cheers

Really looking forward to this game.
Should be a cracking opening 1/4.

Norwood are 'cherry ripe' to be knocked off, whilst fatigue & injury is a worry for North.

It would be great to see 30 K+ there on Sunday for the Final 'legitimate' SANFL Grand Final.
Will the 'Cocks' CS come up with a controversial banner?

Port played West in 1954, 1956, 1958, 1959 and 1962 with Port winning all 5 flags, 3 by less than a goal. Glenelg have never played South or West in a Grand Final. South haven't played Central. West have never played South. If South have ever played Norwood in a Grand Final it would be a long, long time ago. South last played Sturt 73 years ago and North over 100 years ago. North haven't played Sturt for 81 years which is surprising given that they have been in the third and fourth most Grand Finals respectively.

The stat I always found amazing was that until the Eagles played Centrals in the 2000 Grand Final there had never been a Grand final which didn't have at least one of Port, Norwood, North or Sturt.

Great to hear so many neutrals being excited about this game, some great posts.
North have a good following but there's no doubt Norwood fans will easily outnumber us. So come one, come all, don some red, done some white, prepare yourself for some some occasional bad language and come down the southern end and join in the chants and cheers. Let's make Footy Pk go out loud and go out with lots of colour!

Believe me, our banners are very closely watched before they're allowed to be finished/raised by both the club and the sanfl since a reference to cocks at Adelaide Oval a few years ago.
Rest assured we will come up with something bigger and better than any other SANFL or AFL club like we usually do :)

Centrals got in trouble for a banner that said "Lets kick these Cocks off the Park". Then of course there was "You've got no hope you've got no Macca, we're gonna shove it up your clacka" or my favourite "We may not have won a final but at least we don't wear pouncey vinyl".

I don't think we won that final either!

Unfortunately you can't make banners like that anymore!

Its an unwritten rule of banner making to not refer to the other team or people involved with the other team. Its bad luck. ;)

Yeah we found that out the hard way during the 80's and 90's. Although we did win the game with the Macca banner and the Cocks one.
