It stopped at either Peterborough or Crystal Brook but that was only to let people on.

it would cost a normal person about $150 each way, if not more. That's red service. I got my fare extremely discounted because I work in travel

So $300 return on red service. Is that entry level service or medium level or swanky level? As you can tell I don't do train travel more than once every ten years and I think I missed the last scheduled trip

Red service is seat only and pay for everything else. Gold service is cabins with beds and including all meals and selected drinks and also off train tours.

Train travel ain't cheap. Only reason I went red service is that I've already experienced gold service on the Ghan so thought I'd see for myself what red is like and given its a semi work trip I have to report on it. Letc me tell you...it won't be so favourable..

As it is I've just got back on the train and seen a bloke in my seat. Could smell him as soon as I saw him too. Told the fat controller who gave me another seat.

In saying that though..I do highly recommend you take Mrs pilot on a Ghan trip (gold class) sure it's a bit pricey but is something you'll only do once.

Yeah, I know of one poster who's still bleating about his avatar from years ago. I hope you've told him to grow up?

I saw a beauty last night. Had a picture of a Van with "Candy Van" written on the side. Underneath it simply stated "I have your family".

Only thing growing is the family.
My last two winter quarter bills were $1400 and $1100 for a 1 person household.
That's a consequence of living in the hills where heating in the winter is an issue.
You save in Summer because you rarely need air conditioning.

This years was only $362, because I took a 10 week job in northern NSW for the winter.
I've decided that from now on I am going to spend the winters in warmer climes.

Taxi drivers on Grenfell Street, at the pedestrian lights at James place. Insist on trying to wait (west bound) trying to pull in behind the billion other taxis waiting around the front of Salad Choice etc.

ok so what is running in your house all the time?

Things like the TV, can be unplugged when not in use , or when at work unplug it from the power point, then plug in when required (might be small but it helps) , unplug the microwave when not in use, don't have 15 minute hot showers. You must have the heather running continuous whilst at home for that amount. I used to have this issue in the summer for air cond, but rarely use it now. When its hot, I will just have cold showers every few hours and sit in front of the fan and cool off. Sleep in the coolest place in the house etc.
Maybe try a few nights a week in the winter of instead of having the heather going 24/7, try wearing a few clothes on top of others, or if sitting in front of the TV bring your blanket and cover yourself up.
Surely it can not be you have heaps of clothes on, also a blanket, and still freezing cold?

The biggest problem is that it is 6 degrees colder here than the Adelaide CBD which is great in summer but Hell in winter.

I was, in that first year, dependent of either reverse cycle air conditioning or Dimplex heating but there is now a combustion heater as well.
The first year I referred to was also the year I was recovering from surgery in the May and I did keep the heat on 24/7.
I saved a bit the next year by not doing that and keeping the temperature at 18C, not 21C.
I would have used the combustion heater more this year as my primary heat source had I not been away from mid-June until the end of August

Since those big bills I have reverted to what I did in the Dandenong Ranges, and now wear fleecy trackie dacks, Explorer socks, and Kathmandu fleecy jackets at home.
(I miss the natural gas fuelled Hydronic heating system I had there though - it could be set to maintain 18C by day and 14C overnight.)

Yes, there are further economies I could make - two TVs and two HDD Recorders - for example.
I turn the 50" Plasma TV off overnight until I want to use it next, but I do leave the recorders and the 32" LCD TV on standby.
And I do leave the microwave on stand by, and the built in oven, plus the UPS for my computers and the one protecting the valve amplifier and pre-amplifier that run my HiFi system.
I'll give those further thought and consider whether it is worth the inconvenience of turning them off and on in the light of my next round of power bills...

Thanks for the tips.

A newborn child and another under 3 during the winter months is always going to be a strain on the power bill.
