Pavlich set to re-sign

May 31, 2007 FREMANTLE captain Matthew Pavlich is set to sign a two-year, $1 million contract extension, it was reported last night.

Perth TV and radio reported the Dockers would soon announce the club's most important re-signing.

Pavlich, who is out of contract at the end of the season, was the focus of South Australian attention - particularly from Port Adelaide - and Pavlich himself has fuelled speculation by insisting all contract discussions be deferred until the end of the year.

Dockers coach Chris Connolly has maintained his confidence that Pavlich would stay at the club.

Pavlich, 25, is a three-time club best-and-fairest winner and four-time All-Australian.

A native South Australian who played for Woodville-West Torrens as a 17 year old, Pavlich was pick No.4 in the 1999 national draft.

Just out of interest, does anyone know who the 3 drafted players before Pavlich were in that year?

Good decision for himself really.

He we will be 27 by the time he comes out of contract again and he still will create alot of interest from the 2 SA cluns next time he comes out of contract.

I guess the only question is would another club offer more $$$ and for a longer time.

Whether it's true or not who knows, but the mail I heard on what Port were prepared to offer was pretty hefty.

Was there ever any doubt that Pavlich would re-sign with Freo?

I didn't think the Crows or Port ever had a hope in hell getting him.

Another interesting thing is how many of those players taken in the same draft still play for the club that selected them, or even still play at all:

1 Pre selection - Josh Fraser - Collingwood Still there
2 Pre selection - Paul Haselby - Freo Still there
3 Aaron Fiora - Richmond St Kilda
4 Mathew Pavlich - Freo Still there
5 Leigh Brown - Freo Kangaroos
6 Damian Cupido - Brisbane SANFL
7 Danny Roach - Collingwood Who? Assume gone
8 Joel Corey - Geelong Still there
9 Caydn Beetham - St Kilda Who? Assume gone
10 Luke McPharlin - Hawthorn Fremantle

He would be great for the Crows but would probably cost too much (trade-wise), I'm not sure if the Crows would be capable of giving away players which Freo would want. For his career's sake he should come to the Crows and at least play for a decent club instead of that rabble Docker outfit.

For a player of Pav's quality to find a path to the club where he actually want's to play, as opposed to being subject to the draft, it's going to cost a LOT.

I'd heard (and again, this may well not be correct) that Port were going to use Damon White + Jacob Surjan + 1st Round pick, or something along those lines.

I don't really think the Crows have much they could offer ... Their best players are also their oldest, so they would need to include probably Rutten or Thompson (who I doubt they'd want to lose under any circumstances) plus a combination of kids and draft picks (their 1st selection a must) ... Or deal with a Richmond, Melb or Carlton for the 1st pick, which again is going to be expensive.

Don't be too quick to write off what the Crows could have offered:

- Van Berlo would be a recruiting target over in WA (some say potential future captain of the club)
- Reilly (already attracting attention from Vic)
- + draft choices

Both are surely the equal of a Surgan and a White? Altho would Freo give up Pavlich for those guys + draft choice? Think the Power may have been dreaming.

However, I would question tho if Power or Crows were ever a realistic chance. He is Freo's captain, their best player and one of the best in the league. You would have to give up a LOT to get him and when those deals get done, often it's the club that got all the draft choices that ends up better off in the long run. May be better off focussing on trying to find the next Pavlich .....
In between signatures .....

I agree Scoob ... Not saying VB won't be a good footballer (can't see him being a "great") but at this stage he isn't imho.

Reilly is no match winner either, a good solid role player yes, but no match winner.

Still think Port have more to offer

In regards to Port or the Crows chasing Pavlich, and perhaps offering trades/draft choices for him.I think gone are the days of clubs being willing to let players go to another club without compensation ie: Nick Stevens.

If the White/Surjan trade (hypothetical) and drafts were rejected by Fremantle hoping to get more,do you think Freo would be happy to let Pav go into the draft and end up @ Richmond/Melbourne with out anything in return?

I think not.Gone are those days.

All hypothetical,of course. (Like we would give up White for Pavlich 8) ,watch them swoop on that CP)
