Former AFL star Liam Jurrah has been sentenced to six months in jail, suspended after three months, for an assault on a woman during a fight in Alice Springs.
The 24-year-old Warlpiri man and co-accused Mathius Walker today pleaded guilty to one charge of unlawful assault on Jillian Brown outside a 24-hour store in March.
Magistrate David Bamber said the assault by Jurrah and Walker was outrageous.
He said the pair continued to assault Ms Brown even after she fell to the ground.
Mr Bamber said alcohol-related assaults on women in Alice Springs are a huge problem.
In sentencing Jurrah, he took into account his early plea and prior good conduct.
Jurrah was sentenced to six months in jail, which will be suspended after three months.
Two other assault charges and one cause serious harm charge against Jurrah were dropped.
He stood talking quietly to his grandmother as he was handcuffed by police just after the sentence was handed down.
Walker was sentenced to seven months jail.
During the hearing, Jurrah's lawyer had told the court the footballer was the victim of a sustained attack by other people outside the store.
He said during the attack, Ms Brown threw a rock at the car Jurrah had arrived in, smashing the rear window.
The prosecution told the court Jurrah and Walker then followed Ms Brown before Walker punched her repeatedly.
It heard Jurrah punched the woman twice, and one blow to the face knocked her to the ground.
