I'll take the bait TSG.

On face value, not real well.

This is the team from Rd 3 last year v Collingwood;

Carlton
B: Jeremy Laidler, Lachlan Henderson, Christopher Yarran
HB: Nick Duigan, Paul Bower, Zach Tuohy
C: Heath Scotland, Chris Judd, Kade Simpson
HF: Jeffrey Garlett, Jarrad Waite, Marc Murphy
F: Michael Jamison, Matthew Kreuzer, Eddie Betts
Foll: Shaun Hampson, Andrew Carrazzo, Bryce Gibbs
I/C: Dennis Armfield, Mitch Robinson, Kane Lucas, Edward Curnow
Emg: Jordan Russell, Bret Thornton, Brock McLean
In: Michael Jamison, Nick Duigan
Out: Jordan Russell, Bret Thornton

Rd 2 last year v Brisbane

Carlton
B: Bret Thornton, Lachlan Henderson, Jeremy Laidler
HB:Christopher Yarran, Paul Bower, Zach Tuohy
C:Andrew Carrazzo, Chris Judd, Kade Simpson
HF:Dennis Armfield, Jarrad Waite, Jeffrey Garlett
F:Eddie Betts, Matthew Kreuzer, Mitch Robinson
Foll:Shaun Hampson, Bryce Gibbs, Marc Murphy
IC:Heath Scotland, Kane Lucas, Edward Curnow

Rd 1 last year v Richmond

Carlton
B: Christopher Yarran, Lachlan Henderson, Bret Thornton
HB: Dennis Armfield, Paul Bower, Zach Tuohy
C: Heath Scotland, Kade Simpson, Jordan Russell
HF: Jeffrey Garlett, Jarrad Waite, Bryce Gibbs
F: Eddie Betts, Shaun Hampson, Mitch Robinson
Foll: Matthew Kreuzer, Marc Murphy, Chris Judd
I/C: Andrew Carrazzo, Kane Lucas, Jeremy Laidler, Edward Curnow
Emg: Brock McLean, Marcus Davies, Andrew Collins

Point being, our team hasn't changed that much. Detractions for this year, no Waite, no Scotland till Rd 3, no Betts for Rd 2 and 3, Hampson no Rd 2 and 3, Russell, Thornton and Bower all gone.

Scores from last year;

Rd 1 we won by 44pts
Rd 2 we won by 91pts
Rd 3 we won by 60pts

Quick analysis on those scores vs this year;

Pts against;

2012 - 206 (v Richmond, Brisbane and Collingwood)
2013 - 342 (v Richmond, Collingwood and Geelong)

I'd say our draw in 2013 is slightly harder to date.

And this with a coach that prides himself on defense first. I still haven't seen anything that resembles a change in game plan yet. And I'm not stupid enough to think they'll turn that around in three games. The concern is that we're leaking goals heavily. That might be an overall trend in the AFL, I don't know (more soft frees to forwards for instance??).

The positives - we're losing close games and not getting blown out of the water. In parts of games we are which concerns me. But we're fighting through it and working our way back into games (Collingwood being the exception). Hampson looked more confident. Henderson, Rowe (in his 1 game) and Lucas (although he tends to burn it a bit) have done well. Buckley looked good in his only game.

The negatives - Simpson looks lost. Defense doesn't seem to be settled at all, Laidler, Bootsma and Duigan in and out of the side. Casboult - not sure he's the answer at the moment. Looked more settled under Ratten than under Malthouse but I'm putting that down to gamestyle. Midfield still getting smashed at the clearances and we tend to get caught upfield too often and turn the ball over meaning it's Pagan's paddock at the other end. Leaking goals in red time is a big concern too. Still haven't seen Warnock this year. Dinosaur perhaps? Still no Watson.

Carlton were flying this time last year but were a rabble by the end. Their draw is tough so those clowns on FB getting all hysterical about Malthouse have lost the plot. It will take the Blues awhile to adjust to Malthouse's style but they'll be a better a side for it when they do. I can help think though that they are missing a Cloke to bring the ball down to ground for their excellent small forwards.

Yes Mick wont be a miracle fix for the club, will take time.
Their defence has been garbage for years yet they dont seem to have addressed the issue, they leak too many goals

Agree. 0-3 with a tough draw and could be 0-4. We have been competitive against three quality sides and really could have won all 3 and be 3-0. It will take some time to work out who can really play or not. Glaring need is a key forward. We'll have a massive crack at Franklin.
Ignorant people comment that the Judd deal for Kennedy wasn't good for Carlton. I disagree. Judd has been great (minus a few brain fades) and who wouldn't want a premier mid fielder aged 24 when we got him who has won two brownlows in their side. People forget we had Fev and probably still would if he could've behaved himself.
It all comes down to opinion anyway and people love to have a crack at Carlton cos we have a long history of arrogance and success.
