Speaking of which, I had a call from Stanley. He has posted his first article on the doggies site. Worth a read.

PS - this isn't an argument.

Do what I did start typing a response (based along you line of argument) and then thought F*ck it, he has demonstrated no idea of the development challenges facing kids from outside WA, SA & VIC that all I'm doing is wasting kilobytes of webspace...

well what a surprise. All Australian U18s for season 2007.

NSW have 2 kids.

Sa has 1 .

surely this is not possible as the NSW kids are so severely disavantaged according to some of you.

Hang on a moment these two all australian kids do not even have to be drafted they can be elevated by the Swans and Crows at anytime onto their rookie list. Where as poor old BRad Ebert can not .

Seeing as my knoweledge on local kids is nothing compared to the almighty interstate man that is tas.could some explain to me how NSW are producing more all australian kids than the SANFL. Yet they need more advantages in the draft.

It seems a contradiction has occured somewhere. ???

Jar,
I have spoken to a player manager and a club scout who have both said that this years draft pool is extremely shallow. If there is any talent then its coming out of WA and Vic country/Metro.

NSW/QLD kids play in an inferior comp compared to ours. Talented kids here are playing in the best comp out side the AFL and playing well against men. the non footy states have nothing that compares. Luke Crane for example won 3 B&Fs in a row playing in Qld and I expect him to go top 5 here in his first year.

Getting selected in the All Australian side means absolutely bugger all. Hurley was AA captain and got nothing FFS.

get off your dumb horse heater and try and keep up champ.

if nsw and qld kids are SO disadvantaged .how can this vastly disadvantage pool of talent produce more all australian kids than the SANFL ???. You wouldnt just have your head in the sand with a SANFL is awesome attitude would you.

More tasmanians made all australian than the SANFL this year and just as many kids from the NT. These poor disadvantaged souls have just produced more all australian footballers than the vastly SUPERIOR ADVANTAGED SANFL.

head starting to get out of the sand yet ???? or have i witnessed a miracle (reminder more qld kids got drafted last year) ???

All Australian is no guarantee of being drafted agreed. but lets say you could be automatically raised onto a rookie list if you didnt have to compete in the draft as an all australian ??? how do you think you would go then ??? any advantage at all ???

why does these two all australians not have to go thru the draft like every other kid ??? what has brad ebert done wrong that he can not have the same oppurtunity. if sa kids are not going to get equal exposure in this system why are we involved ???

can someone please answer these questions ???

obviously the selectors thought that they had players more worthy of selection than SA did. however SA players have other options open to them unlike NSW/QLD

I can think of at least 5 NT players playing in the various grades in the SANFL. and once again they were worthy of selection more than the SA players in the selectors eyes. Tasmainia is not disadvantaged they have a team in the TAC cup. SA was Simply not good enough talent wise to gain selection in the AA team, however, they have other options open to them

as previously explained to you that you still have to prove that you are worthy of a spot on the full-time list and no guarantees.

Ebert has done nothing wrong not an AA but playing league football in the the best comp outside the AFL. Bernie Vince was playing country footy the year before he was drafted and to my knowledge was not an AA at u/18 level. All Ebert has to do between now and the end of the season is play footy of a high standard consistently to get selected. With the media attention of the SANFL I' am sure that it won't go unnoticed by AFL recruiters. Ebert has other opportunities open to him than the QLD/NSW players. Most of these kids not selected will have to move states like Goodrem from Centrals to prove that he is capable of playing AFL footy. If they don't they will never be heard of again.

I tend to agree with Jar Man Out, Ebert and the other SA youngstes shouldn't be disadvantaged just because they live in this state. Just another example of ridiculous AFL policy.

The day the AFL brings in zoning (it will never happen though unfortunately  ), i'll be very happy.

You say that as if it would be sensible to introduce...how do you propose that zoning could be fairly introduced to a national competition like the AFL?

thankyou.

can not see how giving these all australian worthy kids free access to an afl list helps the future of nsw football and its standard a boost in the arm in anyway shape or form. it is simply discrimination.

heater please bring up how nsw kids that dont get drafted have to travel to sa one more time. like that is relevant in any way shape or form you brain box.

so national selectors do find nsw kids more talented than sa kids do they heater ???? hooray we agree.

so why do nsw need free access to a list then . they surely can not be that DISADVANTAGED then ???

oops let me guess because if they dont get drafted they have to travel to sa to play sanfl cos it is a better league. wise up son this is simply an idiotic explanation.

I have thought about this one for a long time and if it doesn't get through then bad luck.

SA has all of the advantages with out this system the poor NSW kid has nothing. being on a rookie list gains attention of the 2nd level leagues. the AFL preach about an even comp and this evens it up in their developing markets and I hope that it is discontinued when their local comps are up to scratch. This year SA did not have the cattle to have AA selections and NSW have 2 superstars playing in div 2. IF NSW played in Div 1 it could have been a different story.

It gets thru Heater it is just a poor excuse that is simply unacceptable. It is not Brad Eberts or any Sa kids fault that ultimately he grows up in state where aussie rules is a predominant sport. Where in NSw it isn't. I have no dramas with these kids having access to AFL preseasons and training camps to help develope them. But in no way should they have free access to an AFl list when nobody else can. As you say if they are good enough to earn a rookie list spot then i have no argument. But to grant them free access for the sake of developement sorry can not buy that. Plenty of NSw kids have come thru the system before this scholarship system was set up Koschitzke Kelly Hayes Bolton Davis Addison etc........ So to say they have nothing is a tad dramatic.

It is discrimination and the SANFL does nothing.

You can't while there's 10 teams based in Victoria and 2 in SA and WA

Could only do it if the number of teams in each state matched the ratio of populations - ie, 4-5 in Victoria, 2 in SA, etc - then teams draft from their own states

Which will never happen

Adelaide’s NSW scholarship player Taylor Walker was voted best afield in his competition’s senior grand final on Saturday.

Walker, 17, kicked seven goals from centre half forward for North Broken Hill in its 29-point win over West. He had also kicked seven goals the previous week in the preliminary final.

Walker last year was Adelaide’s first signing through the AFL’s NSW Scholarship program. This year he was chosen in the All Australian under 18 side after representing New South Wales at the national under 18 championships.

The scholarship program allows AFL clubs to add selected players to their list once they have reached drafting age. Adelaide will consider its options with Walker before this year’s national draft in November.

The first of the free rides for NSw kids.Thankgod for the scholarship programme who knows what could have happened to this talented all australian junior otherwise.

Obviously alot more deserving than Brad Ebert.

Kids here have more exposure to mature bodies, media, better facilities etc on a consistent basis, I don't understand how you can say they're disadvantaged.

So NSW had 2 kids in the AA team this year? So what? I'm tipping if NSW/ACT Under 18s played SA's Under 18s, the result would be pretty one-sided. 2 kids don't make a golden era. They may have the best 2, but the depth in NSW would be nowhere near what it is here.

I'm tipping if you looked over the drafts in the past 5 years, you'd find more SA players taken than NSW kids... Cooney at #1, Griffen #3, Hurn and Varcoe in the teens, and plenty more. I'm guessing there would be more SA kids drafted, and in higher positions, than NSW kids.
