Re: Great Southern Football League
Anyone keen to start predicting ladders, premiers, mail medal winner etc.
4 of the top 5 come finals time you'd imagine would be Willunga, Victor, Creek and Yank. Don't write off anyone this year - the comp looks really strong with depth being the only issue for the other 6 clubs.
Mail medal - for us I'd like to see Tom Carroll win it of course. It would also be good to see a local gsfl player like Davis Neale or Cousins win won.
Thoughts?

Re: Great Southern Football League
WOW I predicted my ladder prior to Xmas 2012 and I have not changed. As far as Yank talking about the Cricket team not being available through the trials , they were playing B grade cricket and thats where they will play footy. No bigs ins out of that lot even if they are good enough.

Those 4 will definately be in the top 5 wow and I reckon the Bays will make it in also. I think your team will struggle again but may slightly improve. Carroll is quality and the new recruits may help a little but those recruits don't have SANFL or AFL experience like recruits from the top 5 mentioned. Plus depth is an issue at Pongy, good luck for your season ahead.

Encounter Bay and Victor look to have done well and they will make it interesting. Yes there was only 1 A grader playing cricket and the rest were B,s, but 11 of our starting A's were missing v Mt Barker. De Pasquale, Lewis and Harley will all play A's, Jed Durdin is back from a knee and Max James is also back from a season away. There is 2 more to come yet so we expect to be around the same as last season, if not marginally stronger and the depth should be ok. It should be a cracker of a year and anyone taking there eyes of the pill could drop back sharply. Good luck to all.

Re: Great Southern Football League
This is not a criticism of Yank, as its a reflection of modern country footy - but I was wondering how many of their regular A Graders played juniors for them and/or live on the Fleurieu Peninsula?
Up until about 2 or 3 years ago, they didn't appear to have a large amount of quality imports, in the same way that Langhorne Creek have over the years, or Victor in early/mid 90's, but in recent years the Tigers appear to be right up there with the imports, in both quantity and quality.

10 out of the 21 in the Grand Final team played juniors for the club. A further 3 or 4 have been at the club for longer than 3 years from when we were struggling. Unfortunately, nowadays clubs cannot rely on local talent alone to be competitive. the only exception i can think of is Willunga as they are blessed with talented kids and good junior numbers. Success it seems, breeds more success, and being one of the closest clubs to town also helps.
I think the real important point is that depth is so important. everyone says your last 3 players picked in the team each week have to be very capable, you are only as good as your 18th-21st player. That is one area we hope to improve a great deal on this year, as it makes for a good environment for the juniors to look forward to when they come of age to play senior footy.

Re: Great Southern Football League
My predictions:
Premier: Willunga
Runners Up: Victor
Ladder at end of minor round:
Langhorne Creek
Victor
Willunga
Yank
Enc Bay
Strathalbyn
Goolwa
Myponga
Mclaren
I believe there will be only a win or 2 between 6th and 10th. 2013 promises to be a very even year which is great for the comp.
Mail Medal: Tyson Davis Neale (Enc Bay)
Runner Up: Zac Ewer (Victor)
and the GSFL to absolutely wallop the SFL in the association game in June. (please pick a full strength side, none of this U21 rubbish). bring back the rivalry!!!

Re: Great Southern Football League
How is everyone expecting strath to go this year? I know they had a slow start to the season last yr but finished off strong and just missed on a finals spot I think? Have they recruited this yr or?
We played them in a trial last week and they looked to have a good side, couple really good mid fielders, one called cuz and not sure the other blokes name, may have been wearing number 19,

Reckon Creeks will be top 2 again. Close mate of mine plays for Ramblers ( current RMFL premiers ) and they just got over them in a trial at near full strength. He said they were "very very good" and had a few out. What odds for back to back?
My tip for the mail medal is Perrie and the grand final a replay of 2012 with the Tigers getting revenge.

Re: Great Southern Football League
I think Pongy will be the BIG improver . The Whittlesea Cup I think will head North this week . The big two will be Creeks and Willunga. Strath will play finals along with the Bays and Victor . Yank will miss but not by much ( points will be an issue ) . Pongy , Goolwa , Compass and McLaren will finish in that order, but not far out of the top 5.

Re: Great Southern Football League
Looks like Langhorne Creek may have picked up another Echunga player in Brock Rothe.
Will be interesting to see how both Brock and Tom stand up against the tougher GSFL standard.

things are definitely looking the goods at strath!couple new faces but mostly the same side that finished off last season!
ben cousins had a good game and will no doubt be looking to back up his best and fairest win from last season. No 19 would have been mark tucker who always racks up a few possies!
new coach has got the team looking fit and fairly well drilled

Re: Great Southern Football League
My predictions
1.YANK-same as last year will do well balancing their reduced points (B grade to win the flag)
2.CREEK-when the time comes bang!chaching three-peat who can stop this financial steamtrain
3. VICTOR-spent the coin starstudded midfield but for me ego city up to the sauceman to control
4.WILLUNGA-Probs the great mans last hurrah picked up a gun forward but not enough to win it
5.STRATH-new coach vfl, sanfl player will get the redmen up and firing but only by % finals bound
6.BAYS- exciting last year at times not enough to challange some good ins but a major out
7.COMPASS-huge improvers late last season shaped the 5 some big outs but could surprise
8.GOOLWA-have spent some coin but like the 2 above them will miss out just!
9.PONGY-improved list will win more games this year so no clay shooting til seasons end
10.MCLAREN-could end up anywhere from 6th to last have picked up a ex sturt forward.........
Looking forward to a great year there will be no floggings with most margins being below 5 goals a great comp.3 new coaches so it will be interesting to see how they go and the 2nd year fellas go at the bays, compass and mclaren.
Good Luck to all and may the best TEAM win !!!!!!!!
S.Wendlebourn (myponga) medal.............Creek$ premiers on the demons hallowed turf
