Australia has just experienced it's hottest summer on record:

Bureau confirms hottest summer on record

AUSTRALIA'S just-finished sweltering summer melted the record books.

The Bureau of Meteorology has confirmed it was the hottest season ever since records have been kept.

Records were broken for the average temperature and average daytime temperature between December and February.

A new record was also set for the number of consecutive days where the average maximum was more than 39C - the seven days from January 2 to 8 almost doubling the previous record of four days.

Record maximum temperatures were set in Sydney and Hobart and 14 other locations.

The bureau said the summer followed a pattern of extremely hot summers around the world in recent years.

Some more news and analysis on Australia's record breaking hot summer and the longer-term warming trend:

Australia breaks hottest summer record

The Bureau of Meteorology has confirmed that Australia has just experienced its hottest summer on record.

The bureau says the previous hottest summer - measured by average day and night figures from across the nation - was in 1997-98.

Climate monitoring manager Dr Karl Braganza says a particularly hot spell in January has helped towards the new record.

"That's certainly contributed to it being the hottest summer on record, but it has been hot in December and February as well," he said.

"Both of those months right around Australia have been warmer than average and it's extending a real six-month period, so the last six months have been the hottest on record from September to February."

Overall, Australia's average summer temperature came in at 28.6 degrees Celsius.

Fourteen of the weather bureau's 112 long-term climate stations recorded their hottest days on record, including one in Sydney, where the temperature hit 46 degrees in the middle of January.

"Certainly there's a background trend of warming temperatures and there's also a trend in our rate of setting records particularly in the last decade," Dr Braganza said.

"Now we're setting daytime and night-time records around Australia at a very (much) more frequent rate than we were in the past and they outnumber cold records by five to one in some instances."

And he says this summer is likely to be a taste of what is to come in future decades.

"By about mid-century, so in about 40 years, you're actually talking about conditions like this becoming normal," he said.

"It depends on what emissions trajectory we go down, but on those mid to high scenarios, then this certainly would be a taste of things to come."

probably not, but im sure when julia or rudd or swann, or whoever is running that party , the faceless men i.e. that little snake in the grass Bill Shorten will come up with all this garbage that their one year of the carbon tax has prevented the earth exploding due to exsesive heat when its a cool summer

Sky Pilot, Bully's presumption is one cool summer and the whole "the world is warming" rhetoric will fall apart.
This isn't the case, and scientists are always careful to point to trends in the weather. Temperatures are rising like stocks on the market, up, down, up, down. You cannot take one year out of that in isolation and ignore the general trend.
What worries me about Bully's post is that is exactly how people will respond if there was a cool year. People want to be assuaged, reassured, that it's all a crock, and they'll take the slightest dip in temperature or mis-information in the media as proof that global warming is a myth. Clearly that time has passed. Temperature records are tumbling and it seems that the only way some people would be convinced would be if every year set a new record high.
The truth is that next year maybe cooler than this one, but if current trends continue, and I sincerely hope they don't and in that case I will gladly serve as the butt of all your jokes, but if the trends do continue we will soon have a year even hotter than this one, and a few years after that, an even hotter one again.
Zigzag line heading up.
