Regardless of what you think of the standard of the game or its adminstration,
I found this fascinating.

Statistics can tell you any story you want.

Very misleading, what people have to remember is that the AFL fixture is purely created to maximise attendances and t.v ratings, where as your European soccer comps have draws which are created on the fairness of the comp.

Any team in Spain and Italy can make there sides 'premier division' meaning you will get small towns with small populations making it. Also in these leagues every team plays every team twice once home once away, they dont try and maximise crowds by playing Barca vs Real 4 times a season.

How can they compare AFL and Basketball - the type of stadiums the games are played in are completely different!
Piss weak SANFL and the CLOWNS who run it.

Stats can be interpreted in any way that suits.
As others have said the AFL run a fixed draw to maximise crowd attendance.
In regards to the EPL you have to remember that their ground capacity is often smaller and the bigger clubs are sold out every week. Manchester United for instance has been sold out for every game for about 10 years and currently there is a 12 year waiting list for season tickets. If United had a 200,000 seater stadium it would probably still be packed every week. AFL games are rarely sellouts

Shame we've dropped one spot due to the new teams coming in. Used to always be 3rd with only the NFL and Bundeslagia in front.
Remarkable achievement and if you take into account the crazy distances travelled and the smaller population here compared to most countries it's probably miles in front of anything close. Aussie Rules is a game better live though, where a lot of games are probably better to watch on tv.

Distance is a factor but there isn't to many other sports where you have both teams in a game playing at their home ground ala Coll vs Carl at MCG.

Also if Man U played 75% of games at their home ground that would inflate figures.

The MLB average attendances are amazing considering the teams play 160 + games a season.

They didn't.
They separated indoor and outdoor sports, in which the NHL won the indoor category.

How do they define test cricket crowds, by day or game?
87k for three and a half days in Sydney, most tests in Australia get well more than 60+k if they go for 5 days, but probably average 25-30k a day taking in all venues. Probably similar in England, despite their smaller capacity. Wouldn't be the same in the sub-continent for tests, but their limited over crowds may be up there?

Per day would make sense otherwise youd be counting some people 5 times in the one crowd.
A lot of final days are lucky to get a couple of hundred to it.
I've seen some test matches overseas with 3 dogs and a goat in the outer. Still more than a Port home game mind you!

If it was the West Indies in which you saw that, the crowd would've ended up as two dogs. That goat would've been on the menu!

Interesting that if you compare the average and aggregate attendances to the population of the country the competition is played in the AFL is on top of both these lists.
Average attendance per population
AFL -
CFL - Canadian Football
EPL – English Soccer
La Liga – Spanish Soccer
Bundersliga – German Soccer

Aggregate attendance per population
AFL
EPL
MLB – USA Baseball
La Liga
NPB - Japanese Baseball

Has anyone been able to find a full list of the competitions as a few years a go this was released and the SANFL was placed around 100 - a great effort given the populaton of Adelaide.
