Re: Soooooo, how's this weather?
Massive lightning and thunder going on in the Southern Flinders Ranges right now. The rain varies from mild to heavy. A blackout is inevitable I reckon.

Re: Soooooo, how's this weather?
Keefy and I have different theories on the whole thunder and lightning thing...
I was always taught that if the thunder comes 5 seconds after the lightning, that it struck 5 kms away.
Keefy seems to be of the belief that it's about 1km for every 3 seconds...
Anyone else care to offer their theories?

343 m/s through air at sea-level pressure, at about 20 degrees, IIRC.

Re: Soooooo, how's this weather?
think that is correct.
1km every 3 seconds, so if you hear the thunder at the same time you see the flash, you might be in a bit of trouble.

I did the other night. The light nearly blinded me and the sound was ridiculous! It looked like it was only a few hundred meters away.

Unless really stupid people make the sound, then it travels much slower.
