But the if you have a horse that races forward of midfield you have a better strike rate then backmarkers who are always flashing home. But then it all depends on how the race is run also.

It's arrogance of the highest order. Singo should walk it out of the stable.

Glad All Too Hard beat all of hers home.... If I was Singo I would never speak to her again...

Would rather back the SA horses in Melb than Gai's runners... way overrated... and im sick of the over publicity she is getting from the media and then her DH son saying he wishes his mum well at every cross to him! FO back to Sydney all of ya's!! FFS

Well i got the trifecta (only 25% though) and had a 5'er on OP, so a nice little collect.

I'm on Red Cadeaux but I really can't see either of the top 2 being knocked off in the Melb Cup now. I know zero about Mount Athos. Tonight I'll have a look on youtube to see whether I include it in the trifecta or not.

So far, I've limited it to;

American
Dunaden
Red Cadeaux

and then if these get a run;

Shawardi
Jakkalberry
Ethiopia
Southern Speed

I'll include them too.

Johno, here is the article I read this morning;

There were several familiar local faces with multiples chances still in the Melbourne Cup when second acceptances were taken for the race this morning.

As expected, only three of the top 38 ranked horses were withdrawn for the race by today’s 10am second acceptance deadline. They are Manighar and Lloyd Williams' pair Seville and Midas Touch.

The low attrition rate has placed the Melbourne Cup at least temporarily out of reach for four well-ranked internationals - Lost In The Moment (Saeed bin Suroor), Brigantin (Andre Fabre), Shahwardi (Alain de Royer Dupre) and Gatewood (John Gosden) but the news is not so glum for the locals with 16 of the top 24 ranked horses trained in Australia.

Among the 46 horses remaining in the $6.2 million race are multiple entries from the most famous names of Australian racing such as Bart Cummings (Sanagas, Precedence), Gai Waterhouse (Glencadam Gold and Fiorente), Peter Moody (Lights Of Heaven and Voila Ici), Team Hawkes (Niwot and Maluckyday), Michael Kent (Unusual Suspect and Tac De Boistron) and those from the Lloyd Williams yard including Green Moon and Mourayan.

Advertisement There are two races remaining that offer its winner a ballot-free run to the Melbourne Cup. They are Saturday's group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000 metres) and group 2 Lexus Stakes (2500 metres).

Shahwardi was highly impressive when storming home to win the Group 2 Herbert Power handicap at Caulfield at his first Australian start, beating home many local runners aspiring to Cups starts. Gatewood was luckless in that race, then convincingly won the Geelong Cup, which has supplied three recent Melbourne Cup winners. Brigantin was third in that muddlingly-run race, while Lost In the Moment has a strong record in good quality European staying events, and ran a creditable three-length sixth in the 2011 Melbourne Cup.

The Melbourne Cup field will be determined after final acceptances are taken at 5pm this Saturday, at the completion of the Victoria Derby day meeting at Flemington.

Ethiopia, Southern Speed and Green Moon, which all contested last Saturday's Cox Plate at Moonee Valley, were all paid for by their connections.

A decision on a run for Ethiopia, rated the best local Cup hope, is not expected until later in the week. The lightly-raced four-year-old was targeted at the Plate, and connections are keen not to over-tax him, but his strong staying effort in the weight-for-age classic gave them cause to reconsider ending his campaign.

Melbourne Cup second acceptances

1 Americain (USA) (Alain de Royer Dupre)

this one spells it out a bit more clearly;

FOUR high-profile internationals are in danger of being excluded from tomorrow week's Melbourne Cup after connections of several local hopes yesterday opted to continue their Cup dreams.

Godolphin's galloper Lost In The Moment (29th in order), French pair Brigantin (30th) and Shahwardi (31st), as well as Gatewood (36th) are stranded outside the top 24 for the $6.2 million race as local owners cling on to their spots despite some disappointing runs at the weekend.

36th would mean there is very little chance of it running unless it wins on the weekend.

Yeah should be out of reach for Gatewood but possibly the VRC will use discretionary powers to get as many internationals in as possible

Anything in the Melbourne Cup that is trained by Gai Waterhouse should be $1001 minimum

Also whilst I'm on my high horse.. WTF is the go with this bloke... let your riding speak for itself (bloody good rider)... every time he gets interviewed after he wins a decent race he puts on the waterworks and claims its his greatest every moment in the sport etc etc... If he really thought that the Cox plate was a bigger moment in his career than riding MD to her 3rd Melbourne Cup a week and a half after winning one of the best Cox plates in history he really is a muppet...
