Seems this free agency thing is working pretty well. Definitely good for the players and the restricted/unrestricted classifications make it fairer for the clubs.

Essendon has lodged the papers for Goddard, Saints now have 72 hours to match it or he is ours

Does the player get any say in the decision? For example could he opt to stay at St Kilda for a lower salary than Essendon might offer?

Its the players choice because Goodard has told his manager that he wants to go to Essendon and if Saints match the offer he can still chose to leave by going in the pre season draft

Of course he does. He would be negotiating with different clubs etc. Just because he had qualified for free agency a club couldn't claim him. Otherwise Power and other clubs with a heap of room in the salary cap would pick up superstars
