I think the fact that Tony was caught lying in the aftermath of the recent Olympic Dam decision may also have given Julia a boost...Sky Pilot wrote:Yes - her bounce in the polls is long overdue. I think I voted for the Socialists back when I was eighteen. I don't mind them at all. If their ideology could only stand up in practice, I'd probably be a socialist myself.

I think people of all political persuasions would be pretty concerned that Mr. Abbott has to resort to lying to try to discredit the carbon tax.

Oh I was brought up in a fierce Labor family in Findon. I couldn't wait to turn 18 so I could go to a polling booth with mum and dad and my union organiser uncle and vote Liberal. I loved it. They were shocked and I loved it even more. I am today a financial member of a union. I just dont vote for them because I firmly believe in the golden rule. Those with the gold make the rules. You have to have smart people start up businesses and run them profitably to given employment to t.hose who aren't so smart. What the hell is wrong with that I wonder.

I think my mother sometimes voted other than the way he told her to, from things she hinted at occasionally.

What a ridiculous statement!!! The measure of a person's intelligence is certainly not dependent on whether they run a business or not. In many cases, people run businesses simply to gain a financial reward. They would rather have money for themselves than provide for others. After all, think about how a profit occurs. It is the difference between revenue and expenses - either screw the consumer by charging too high a price or screw the resource provider by paying them less than they are worth. Many intelligent people do not run businesses, wanting instead to help others in society. Should our country not be run more by those who actually have care and compassion for others? I would hate to see a political system where the motivation for being in office was to look after just themselves individually and not the community.

I don't see any politicians in any party giving their pay rises to charity, or saying they don't need them and lets use the money for Health or Education.

Actually there were a few who did give their last pay rise to charity... from the Greens!!!
Not my favourite party but well done to them for that.

Okay, I did not want to make it too personal, Sky Pilot, but I will answer that for you. I have a Doctorate in Accountancy and practiced as an accountant in the private sector for fifteen years. I gave that up to try to inspire young people to achieve their best and became a teacher at a Catholic College. I am also currently studying my Masters in Catholic Education.
I have seen some good managers in business but I have also seen some woeful ones. Being an auditor gave me the opportunity to see many, of varying shades, and to advise them on how to more efficiently run their organisations.
Cheers

You should also realise that the owners of many COMPANIES actually have very little say in the running of their COMPANIES as a company is owned by shareholders. Management could be quite divorced from the owners. The owners could, in fact, have nothing to do with the day-to-day operations of the COMPANY and just contribute funds. Management make almost all the decisions for the owners instead.
Sole proprietorships and partnerships on the other hand.......
Oh, but because you run your own business you are soooooooooooooooo smart and knew that!!!! Pfttt
Now can you see that the ability to OWN a business says nothing about your actual intelligence????

Always makes me laugh when people talk about the "real world". Either everyone or no one is in the "real world". Our Australian world it comprised of a series of legal, economic and social conventions, none of which are absolutely critical to the survival of humans. Other countries live by different conventions and beliefs, are their people not living in the real world?
People own businesses for a number of reasons, including financial as well as independence, specific interest, etc etc. Are you trying to tell me the owner of the local garage is smarter than the head of a multinational corporation?

Re: Abbott Watch
HARD-RIGHT members of the NSW Liberals have had a major victory in a factional stoush over candidate preselections, with the Supreme Court stopping the annual general meeting of the state branch on Saturday.
NSW Liberals president Arthur Sinodinos, a federal senator, says the party is reviewing the Supreme Court injunction.
"This is a disappointing result, but we are examining the arguments and considering next steps," he said.
The decision throws into disarray NSW preselections for the 2013 federal election and is a blow to federal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott, who had wanted to avoid the debacle of 2010 when candidates were chosen too late.
Justice William Nicholas granted the injunction on Friday after NSW Liberal Party Central Coast branch member Denis Pogson filed an application earlier in the week.
At the heart of the internal brawl is a push to hold direct elections and to limit the state executive's powers to override branches and install its preferred candidates.
The hard right, led by NSW government minister Chris Hartcher, had wanted the changes to be voted on at the annual general meeting in Sydney - a request that was refused by the party's state executive.
