Re: The South Australian Political Landscape
AN EARLY favourite has emerged in the race to replace State Liberal MP Ivan Venning in the Barossa Valley seat of Schubert.
Venning announced this week he’ll retire at the March 2014 State election, having held the safe seat for 22 years.
“I’ve announced it early so that potential candidates can have plenty of time to get organised,” Venning said yesterday.
Party sources are already pencilling in Stephan Knoll, managing director of Barossa Fine Foods and deputy chair of FoodSA, as the most likely prospect for the seat.
Knoll, a former Entrepreneur of the Year, told Indaily he’s likely to put his hand up when nominations for the seat open later this year, after finalisation of the Electoral Boundaries Commission redistribution.
Knoll is aligned to the party’s right faction, headed by Senator Cory Bernardi.
He’s served as president of the Young Liberals since last year, but will be stepping down from that role on Friday.

Re: The South Australian Political Landscape
SA Government Ministers would be banned as “bait” for party political fundraising, under legislation introduced into state parliament by the Greens.
Greens leader Mark Parnell said the Bill would stymie such groups as Labor’s SA Progressive Business, which promotes access to ministers at private lunches and dinners.
“The term ‘minister’ is a statutory title, not a plaything for a political party,” he said in a media statement.
“It is outrageous that fundraising bodies like SA Progressive Business are promoting special access to Ministers of the Crown in return for dollars to the Labor party,” he said.
Mr Parnell used as an example an upcoming SA Progressive Business lunch on behalf of the SA Labor Party that is being hosted by a major government contractor Hansen Yuncken at the end of July. Access is being offered to Premier Jay Weatherill and Mineral Resources and Energy Minister Tom Koutsantonis.

Re: The South Australian Political Landscape
I'm with Mark Parnell on that one.
Payment for access potentially leads to payment for favours.
And fancy the ALP giving advantage to the rich over the ordinary worker - so much for their rhetoric.
(Yes, I'd also be opposed to the Liberal Party doing it.)

Re: The South Australian Political Landscape
Did someone suggest Redmond be removed as leader due to lack of policy announcements?

They have already said there wont be substantial policy announcements until the election to keep Labor's larder completely bare.

Re: The South Australian Political Landscape
Yeah right
They are the softest touch going around
It used to be "announce and defend"
Now it's "announce by anyone other than JW, defend, duck, JW to reverse"

Yeah, you're right - sorry - an exaggeration - it takes them far longer to react.
48 hours only takes them into the defend stage.
It takes a lot longer to move through the other stages towards capitulation and JW swoops in to save the day

Re: The South Australian Political Landscape
State Labor is a complete joke. Where do you start? JW is easily the weakest premier in Australia. Look at how he acted in Canberra? Completely over-shadowed by other state premiers at door stops and press conferences. He is a socialist leftie drop kick hideously out of his depth. Also treading water and due to drown at any given time is Wortley with his ridiculous mullett, Irish drop kick Pat Conlon who has no idea about running public transport. Hilly the health guy is a class traitor who swans around expensive restaurants and acts like a Claytons silvertail Liberal. Treasurer Snelling stutters and stumbles when questioned by ABC guns Matt and Dave and he really couldn't run a chook raffle at your local croquet club. Please stop me laughing when I peel off rocket scientists like Leon Bignell, Chloe Fox, Tom Koutsantonis, Michael Atkinson, Lin Brueur (chuckle chuckle) Grace "what a disgrace" Portolesi, John Rau and so on. We South Australians deserve better and until the Liberals seriously lift their game we are doomed to remain in the grip of of this hopeless Labor club.

Re: The South Australian Political Landscape
Yes, Labor have run their dash and should have been turfed out at the last election, but somehow they won with Rann and Foley.
The fact that there are leadership rumours circulating about Redmond when in fact she should be in the box seat shows how dysfunctional the Liberals are.
We, the poor peasants have to put up with a rabble on both sides of the political divide ... sigh, and it's the same story federally FFS.

Sorry - it was clearly an exaggeration.
But you did say "Anytime during this Labor Governments term."

I think all of them are in 2012, and I could easily go back in time but I'm bored now.
They are $hit - face it. Trying to gain popularity.
If 54% of the people asked Jay to run naked down Rundle Mall - he'd do it (In the old days, Foley would have done it for nothing)
