THE state MP facing child pornography allegations in court has now been charged with new and more serious offences.

In the Adelaide Magistrates Court today, the prosecution withdrew the existing seven charges against the former Labor representative, but laid a fresh information alleging 14 offences of obtaining access to child pornography. Seven of those charges are aggravated.

The offences are alleged to have occurred between August 6, 2010, and April 12, 2011.

After a pre-trial conference held in a closed court, the media was allowed into the courtroom to hear prosecutor John Wells reveal the accused would now face 14 charges, some of which are major indictable.

Major indictable offences are considered to be charges of such gravity that they are heard in the District Court before a jury, rather than the Magistrates Court.

Swings and roundabouts, too, for Mitch Williams, the Opposition’s Deputy Leader still poisonously on the nose with his colleagues, to the point that he was rolled in a party-room vote for a position on the Liberals’ state council.

A couple of weeks ago, a colleague of mine (a respected member of the press gallery) peered curiously down at Mitch as the House of Assembly’s members gathered for another combative Question Time.

This reporter seemed lost in thought as he studiously assessed what had changed about the blustering Member for Mackillop.

Finally the penny dropped: “Has Mitch shaved his beard off?” he asked, surprised.

He had. About four years ago.

The episode seems an apt metaphor for explaining why so many in the Liberal party-room are vocally underwhelmed by Mitch Williams’ performance.

He continues to fly under the radar, barely making an impression.

He calls for serious questions to be asked, without asking them.

Isobel Redmond shafted Martin Hamilton-Smith as her elected deputy because she didn’t want an offsider who might have a realistic hope of usurping her job. On that front, at least, roping in Williams was a masterstroke, since he has no hope in Hades of leading the Liberal Party.

The irony is that he appears to have put some noses so far out of joint that he could bring Redmond’s leadership down with him.

After all, she effectively installed him as deputy, and it will be a direct reflection on her judgement if his colleagues decide he is not up to the job.

For this reason, he is probably safe for now. Much as many may want him gone, removing him would effectively mean removing Redmond as well, and that is a far more serious proposition.

But the Liberals must determine whether this issue can be resolved (or at least ignored) in the interests of unity, or whether it will continue to fester. Because if the latter, the party is in serious trouble, in danger of reverting to the unfocussed rabble of previous incarnations.

If the Government can kick off the week with an embarrassing backdown from a mean-spirited budget saving, and still end the week relatively unscathed, it does suggest a certain lack of drive on the Opposition side.

I really couldn't care less about Mitch Williams.
My point is how biased your posts are in an attempt to avert the attention away from a totally useless government.
I heard Pat Conlon trying to talk his way out of this mess and he was totally bamboozled on 5AN
Weatherill is now doing what Rann tried to do in his dying days - try to win the popular vote at the expense of his colleagues
Nobody in the government will know what back flip will be coming next.
The past 3 years has been a total waste and the State is now facing bankruptcy because of these muppets

1. I mentioned the Cadell ferry backflip.

2. I don't doubt that you don't care about Mitch Williams none of your fellow Liberal Party hacks do either.

3. I've made plenty of criticisms of this state Labor govt both on here and elsewhere in the past (I dropped some inside info I got on here during the 2010 election campaign, critical of Mike Rann you and only you asked me to clarify some of this info, and 3-4 days later it appeared in the press with The Advertiser beating it right up, it confirmed my suspicions about you). We're all biased just some a little more than others Jimmy!

I'm not sure there is much left to sell!
Most state assets, sadly, had to go after the Bannon fiasco, and the present government is already disposing of the rest to kept its unfunded liabilities down to just massive...
(Now the unfunded state superannuation liability is a lot more than the $8 billion it was under Bannon.)

Mitch Williams' role as a shadow water minister has to be tenuous - particularly the water one.
Given my previous location I pay a bit of attention to the portfolio and he never seems to lay a glove on the government.
He's been pretty much absent in the River Murray debate.

Unemployment in S.A jumps 1.2% in a month, 16 000 full time jobs lost. Yet according to Jack Snelling its all an anomoly...

Perhaps it does actually have something to do with S.A being the highest taxing state in Australia? When companies like Castalloy and others pull up stumps and move offshore or interstate, what are the State Government doing to replace those jobs and to grow the economy with more jobs as the population grows? - SFA apparently....
