Perhaps they could merge with a Melbourne club and both move to Tassie! 8)

It's got nothing to do with making the sport national.
They can prop up clubs like GWS and GCS as long as the TV rights keep bringing in billions
The only people screwed by the AFL are the Tasmanians who have more right to hate the AFL administration than the rest of us put together
The only way they are going to get a team is to collectively turn their TV's to another channel for a couple of years

Bingo the AFL is afraid that kids from Tassie or current Tassie players will go back. The only way Tassie will get a team is if a team moves there.
The smartest thing the NRL has so far done with channel 9 is allow GEM to show league games to Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide live on a Friday night. This will be a war and if the NRL has any brains they would seriously look at an Adelaide team along with a Perth team.

Yeah, soccer is going very well in this country isn't it. Bet my life GWS is around longer than any Western Sydney soccer team....... or Basketball team. :-)

I'm not sure this country should allow any more Soccer supporters in, and those who persist in calling it "Football" should be deported.. ;)

Soccer is rebuilding and always will be rebuilding in this country. It is number 4 in support but more players play it. With all that has gone on behind the scenes and Sir Frank controlling Soccer Australia there is some problems.
Right now the AFL has the cash from TV rights and there will be a fight over them because 4 states and 2 territories prefer AFL.
There will be a war between the NRL and AFL very soon and you can see it happening. With the NRL now showing the game on Gem is the first shot in this war. The new rugby league commission which has taken control of the NRL away from the ARL and New limited. This is a good thing the same thing needs to happen with the Soccer Australia to move forward.

Good for you each to there own. I enjoy many different sports and always have. I see a 90+ point hammering as a boring game of Aussie Rules. Cue the 2007 AFL Grand Final.

I always find it amusing in these type of threads that people are happy just to kill off clubs with over a hundred years of history to make the comp more "even", but it's never their team they suggest is gone.

How about we start by getting rid of the franchises/corporations created solely to play in the league first, so goodbye West Coast, Adelaide, GC and GWS, that puts it down to 14 teams, keep Freo so you have a team in WA. Leave the AFL to real clubs.

What was the deal worth? I can't find anything about the NRLs new tv rights deal. Anyway, doesn't matter what the NRL gets, it still won't make it a better game than Aussie Rules. NRL - the greatest ever cure for insomnia!

Sorry my mistake, getting ahead of myself. The TV rights deal is set to be finalised by the end of the year, rumoured to be in the vicinity of $1.4 billion I beleive.

Deregulate the AFL altogether and rename it the VFL (wind the clock back to 1986 to simplify it), West Coast, Fremantle, Adelaide, Port, Western Sydney, Gold Coast disband all premierships accumulated remain the property of their licence holders. Brisbane are a special case and can please themselves and either move back to Melbourne to be called Fitzroy or stay put. All players return to their club before they were drafted. Each TAC cup side is merged with a 'VFL' Team therefore if drafted from TAC cup they are automatically allocated to a 'VFL' team. Revive the VFL recruiting zones much like how the SANFL works now.

The North Eastern FL probably doesn't need to alter much accept their returning 'Elite' players cannot be pilfered by rival leagues. If your club overspends and cries poor then its tough luck you either rebuild your finances or fold no handouts.

The only draft is for interstate players only looking for more opportunity if they can't find what they are looking for in their home state.

Get rid of the Pre season bull dust 2 trial games and its season on. Play the normal State league season with a new 'AFL' incorporated into the season structure (Foxtel Cup if you wish).

State of Origin footy is back playing 2 games per year

And at Skilled Park Phanto? Got a spare 35 mill to prop up a Rugby team in a Rugby state that has only three teams in it. Oh dear! ;)

You could also include the Brisbane Bears. People talk about the 'Bad News Bears' but they still managed to win their first two games in their inaugural 1987 season, secured 6 wins overall, and were highly competive in many of their matches.
Their final percentage was a respectable 79 - higher than that of the legendary Collingwood who finished one game above them!

The concessions the Bears got were considerably less generous than those of Gold Coast and GWS.

Port (10 wins and a draw), West Coast (11 wins) and Fremantle (8 wins) had slightly better inaugural seasons but they were from established football states.
