Matthew Scarlett was right.

Talk on the national game

Matthew Scarlett was right.

Postby Moe » Tue Apr 03, 2012 8:36 am

Even though I am a one eyed Geelong supporter, I feel that Matthew Scarlett has done what most AFL players, and supporters have wanted to do for a while by belting Hayden "Short man syndrome" Ballintine.
Furthermore, I think that what Scarlett did does not deserve a longer sentence than Ballintines off the ball elbow on Paul Chapman. At least Scarlo was face on the the little pr%&k.
Andrew fat cat Demetriou's line that he plays within the rules, and pushing up into someone's chin is ok leads me to believe that now I can head butt someone if I come from below and hit the person on the chin?
Chris Scott berating Scarlett for his brain snap intrigues me more, as if someone had have done that to him at Brisbane, he would have woken up a week later.

Footy can well do without thuggery, but if people want to talk about role models, I know who I want my boys to take after.
Not the little fokker who hits behind play and annoys the crap out of people, but the guy who sticks up for himself and his mates.

Had to get this off my chest.

From a non Geelong football supporter, what Hayden did on Saturday night was fantastic. Stood up to the Geelong bullies, took as good as what he gave, and made a couple of veterans look stupid. Even got under the coaches skin. He also played an influential part in the Freo victory.

In a game that is becoming more sterile and predictable by the year, thank christ for players like Hayden, Milne and King.

I reckon the little turd clocked Chappy in the balls.

We rest players anyway, so Scarlo will have his early in the season now.

Didn't see the incident, put beleive a Freo player kicked the goal and then Ballantyne went up to Scarlett just to get "in his face" with no real need to do so? Similar to what Sam Mitchell did when Barry Hall gave away thoe 3 x 50's a few years ago? I'm not sure this player who has no reason to get involved but just "gets in the face" of an opponent deserves much protection - is different from "flying the flag" or sticking up for a team-mate.

Obviously not, but I think with the current rules where any retaliation, no matter how slight, will earn at least a free, it is becoming a blight on the game. Not saying Scarlett shouldn't be suspended, but think it is totally unfair when they pay frees for pushes in the face or neck.

I'm sure you would rather he had a rest against GC or GWS, not against Hawthorn.

Im not a great player, so I do exactly what Ballentyne does. Give a bit of lip, niggle, annoy the crap out of people. Sure I have to cop a few but most of the time it has the desired effect.

I love those type of players.

Got no problems, HH3, if a player is prepared to cop a few, sometimes it gets a player motivated a bit, but when the rules at AFL and now SANFL are totally in favour of the player who has no need to get involved, and the opponent is basically "hunted" then I think that is wrong.

Its not our year to win the flag anyway, its an even year, the year we give the other 17 clubs a chance to win it. ;)

Will start this by saying I've never been a Scarlet fan and I have just listened to Mark Robinson on 360. Ballantyne plays footy a certain way and Scarlett felt he was above the game, even for a split second. Both Scarlett and Ballantyne have copped their punishments for separate incidents and should move on.

The AFL says its a family sport etc etc and no one likes that sort of behaviour... BULLSHIT!! The crowd love a good stoush! Fires them up, adds a bit of passion to the game! To imply that tempers boiling over on the field influences young kids to be thugs is rubbish! BRING BACK THE BIFF!!!!!!
