Re: Ben Cousins
I really struggle to understand what addiction is. I pose this question. How many people do you know to have tried drugs? Whether a once off. Rarely use on social events. Eg festivals, big occasions. Call me stupid but to me drug addiction is a cop out. To me it is thrown around to make excuses for the weak minded. I can see why someone with a terrible upbringing, no job and no one to turn to may look to alcohol and drugs to try to ease there pain. But seriously ben cousins has had the life most people would kill for and has no one to blame for the position he is in other than himself

It's no joke mate. My Uncle was on smack. He's clean now but once you're hooked on the shit it lurks beneath the waves like a razor sharp reef for the rest of your days. He'll never be as 'high' again and the depression involved with kicking the habit also takes its toll. Smack (and anything you are physically addicted to) takes over your life and even if you stop taking it once hooked it continues to rule over you. IMO Cousins didn't take drugs because of a tough upbringing, but because he has a strong sense of entitlement. Like Gary Ablett, Wayne Carey and Shane Warne not enough people in charge had the balls to say 'no' to him. 'Invincible' Ben thought he could rock and roll all night and party every day but it doesn't matter who you are....the shit catches up with you.

One book I read about Heroin addiction written by a medical addiction specialist was called something like, "It's so good, don't even try it once!".
In medical practice I've found two groups who are prone to turning to drug use:
1. Those who had traumatic upbringings.
2. Those who, when you look back, were developing illnesses like Bipolar Disorder or Schizophrenia and had not gone for medical help first.
There is also evidence that some people are genetically more prone to become addicted to alcohol and drugs than others.
These may be the ones who get hooked when trying these things out as party drugs, then rationalise their addiction to themselves.

Re: Ben Cousins
Is he for real ???? He gets bail then breaks it on the same day
Just read the updated article on AdelaideNow
http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/sport/afl ... 6312806440
"Cousins was arrested at 7.15pm by waiting police and was released on bail after being charged with possession of methylamphetamine with intent to sell or supply.
He was released under bail conditions that stipulated he remain in Esperance, south of Perth.
He was then caught trying to leave town today, was re-arrested and appeared in Esperance Magistrates Court this afternoon.
A clerk at the court said Cousins had now been released to an address in Perth on altered bail conditions.
The clerk said he was no longer in police custody and had been ordered to reappear in Perth Magistrates Court on April 2. .....
Cousins, 33, is due to appear in the Kalgoorlie Magistrate's Court on Monday April 2 via video link.

Well said REB, as you've pointed out, this issue is a lot more complex than what ignorant people would have you believe.

Do you seriously think that if he had a choice he would choose where he is at???
Obviously never seen or been around anyone with a serious addiction? How good would it be if it was simply all in the mind. A very close friend of mine battles this daily, along with my mothers husband who battles alcohol addiction. She lost her home because of it, I wish you were able to pop over and have a chat to him when this was happening, would have been an inspiring speech!
Yep people make choices in life, some better than others, sometimes these choices are too hard to fix. I just hope he gets himself sorted before it is too late.

I never said it was a joke.... I just don't have sympathy for the bloke. I love hitting the booze as much as the next bloke and have dabbled in drugs admittedly on a small scale. But at the end of the day the choices we make in life are made by no one else other than yourself. It's a shame someone of his talents has been tarnished by his off field actions. I really feel for his family to be honest.

REB
