Adelaide Oval at the Moment

Postby Wedgie » Thu Apr 19, 2007 10:34 pm

Chooktracker posted this on the Roost and I thought it might interest a few here:

Chooktracker wrote:I heard that Adelaide Oval was being resurfaced, so this afternoon I dropped in there on the way home and took some snaps.

Was also lucky to speak to Les Burdett who seemed stressed due to the massive works happening there.
It is a very strange sight.

Les told me it was the first time it had been dug up since it was first laid in 1870.
Amazingly it has no under ground drainage, or pop up sprinklers. It is a credit to him that it always looks picture perfect.

It is having new top soil and instant couch turf, currently being grown especially for the AO.
It is getting a new underground watering system as well as drainage piping.

The cricket wickets are being left untouched.

Enjoy the snaps, it might be another 130 years before they do it again.

Just looks like Unley Oval to me.

Just remember Prospect Oval is full of dog sh... as well thanks to a wonderfully naive council.

Remarkable pictures, one of the news services showed some footage last night and it was a sight to behold.
Les has done a wonderful job given the old irrigation system.

It will be interesting to see what variety of couch grass they decide to go with, people when choosing lawn are often pushed towards Buffalo grass, yet I have always found couch to be a better surface. Santa Anna is the popular one used in many backyards and some sports fields. Winter Green is what I have in my backyard because it is better equiped to stay green in shady areas, Winter Green is used on various golf courses around Adelaide Yet there is another new one on the market called 'Greenleas Park Couch" which is supposed to have a softer leaf and is ideal for Cricket ovals, so I would suggest maybe this is what they are going with?
