Also no offence, there were definately some tough characters in the 80s, but really just like Rugby League, the 80s were an era of thugs! Elbows and cheap shots dont make you a hard footballer in my opinion..

Whose the young bloke from the Power? Is it Thomas? Matt Thomas i think? From what i've seen he goes pretty hard.

One very big difference here, Brown can actually play

i am most certainly not a brisbane supported but Brown is probably my favourite player in the AFL, the way he runs back in to contests with eyes only for the football is truly amazing, knowing you are more than likely going to be collecting by a steam train coming the other way, he has more courage in his big toe than most of us will ever have, and i really hope he can come back and have that presence he has had in the past. when hes up and about so are the lions, hes a ripper on the footy show and stuff like that and i reckon would be an absolute belter to get on the cans with

Joel Selwood is by far my favourite player because of how hard he goes.

Also, this might get shot down, but from the pies, Sharrod Wellingham goes pretty hard, specially considering his very slight build. I'm not saying he's as tough as Browny or even Selwood, but i like the way he throws himself into it.

Jack Ziebell wouldn't take a backward step IMO.

Problem is with the AFL the way it is these days it can be to your detriment to attack the ball/player too hard.

I was always taught growing up go in hard and you won't get hurt I shudder to think what junior coaches are trying to tell kids these days.

Go in as hard as you can without being reckless for your or everyone around you's safety while assessing all possible outcomes in a split second. All this expected from a generation who probably won't be able to do maths without a calculator...

Rubbish. Plenty of blokes still throw themselves head first into a contest...

Name on who isn't a soft footballer.

Jonathon Brown should have played in the 80s

It's hilarious how there's this common perception that footballers these days are 'soft'.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

I'm really annoyed at this happening to Brownie as he was looking in terrific nick and I was quietly confident that he could lead us to early-season wins over Melbourne at the MCG and Carlton at the Gabba on Easter Thursday night to be 2 and 0 by round 3.

I can't help thinking that Matt Maguire's clumsy, flying leap to fist that ball away in a meaningless intra-club scratch match was totally unneccessary. I mean, save acts of desperation like that for a real game. Then there's a strong chance that if you collect someone it will be a forward from the opposition, not a team mate.

Modern day footballers are the pinnacle of athletes in any sport world wide. If they are allowed to play and hit blokes like 1990 people will be crippled or die.
Games tougher that its ever been....I just hate the holding the ball defenition that's all.
