Longmuir knee battle goes on

FREMANTLE coach Chris Connolly has hinted that a degenerative knee condition may not only keep ruckman Justin Longmuir out of Sunday's western derby — even if he is fit — but may prevent him from playing further matches at Telstra Dome, due to concerns about the hardness of the surface.

Longmuir was not brought to Melbourne last weekend to play against Essendon at Docklands and will probably not play in the Dockers' other fixture at the ground later this season — against St Kilda in round 20.

The 26-year-old has had a long-running battle with his knee and moved gingerly in a subdued performance against Port Adelaide in round one, which yielded just four kicks, seven handballs and five hitouts.

"We just think the Telstra Dome surface is too hard for the preparation he has done so that influenced the decision as much as anything," Connolly said of Longmuir's absence last weekend.

Connolly said the Dockers would weigh up the value of returning Longmuir to the team for the derby against the benefits of retaining a makeshift ruckman such as Daniel Gilmore, who played against Essendon last weekend.

"Mark Seaby has been in the top three or four in the competition in winning hitouts and with Dean Cox coming back, Justin will be strongly considered," Connolly said.

"There is a possibility, considering the form of Daniel Gilmore, who we had last week as a second ruckman. We will look at different options."

Longmuir has three years of his contract to run but the Dockers are understood to be grooming young ruckman Robert Warnock to play at AFL level this season, with a view to him supporting Aaron Sandilands at centre bounces next season.

Connolly denied that Longmuir's knee problem had worsened. "It is a degenerative type of injury," he said. "I don't think it is getting significantly worse week to week, it just needs to be managed correctly."

He expected Longmuir to be fit to play against the Eagles, pending him getting through a training session last night. But the 138-game veteran battled to play 16 games and kick 19 goals last season and Connolly weighed up the possibility of not playing Longmuir even if he was fit.

The Dockers had another blow last night when defender Heath Black was suspended for one match after being found guilty of striking in the WAFL on Monday.

YEAH
I follow the Saints and had to evaluate later season fade outs
and also extensive leg related long term injuries
Heard rumblings from current and former players about the DOOM surface
and tried to construct a theory.
Several news articles as well on the matter

This doom system seems like a good one but you could probably use it to make money instead of just making a point. Betting on Melbourne to beat Geelong when they 19 players out was just mug punting. Perhaps the best way to use a system is to work out when NOT to use it.

Might even have a punt myself.

Agree REB, however with every system you just have to follow the system Blindly no matter what...I hated putting the Melbourne bet on but had to for the system...at the end fo the season if I make a profit it wont matter...Im also expecting this system to show a few upsets by years end...

There are 3 bets this weekend so will be interesting!!! Swans, Kangas and Saints have all played their last 2 on the concrete...Ill be betting against them all this week

Just another small stat on the DOOM
Here are the Sydney Swan stats in 2nd halfs in 2007

SS 7-5
WC 1-6

RI 6-4
SS 7-4

SS 6-12
BL 3-5

AC 3-2
SS 4-8

SS 7-2
ML 4-8

KA 8-8
SS 11-4

So after 6 rounds Sydney had won every last half of the game
The KA game was played at the DOOM in round 6
SS then played SK at the doom in round 7
This was SS 2nd game in a row at the DOOM
And the 2nd half results were

SK 8-3
SS 5-1

Did SS get outscored in a 2nd half because they were leg weary after playing
consequtive weeks on the DOOM, or was SK a superior opponent ?

More compelling stats on the T/DOOM residents in all 2007 games

WB have lost the 7 2nd halfs involved in
KA have lost 5 2nd halfs
SK have lost 3 2nd halfs

in 21 games the residents have won 6 2nd halfs and lost 15

All the above stats might change as the season progresses, but one thing
we can establish is that the Doom sides may suffer from heavy leg syndromes.
