Port Adelaide Season 2012

Talk on the national game

Can see both advantages and disadvantages of taking him... but personally i would love to see him running around in a Power gurnsey, bit of an "x-factor" player that will be good value for the next few years and a lot of the younger generation see him as a "superstar" of the game, so might brighten up the look at the Power and get a few more people on board... and show people the players do wanna come to Port.

Thats a fair point to make. I guess with the lcak of depth you guys had this seson, with the additions of Renouf, Ebert and then say if you did pick him up having Davis as well. That is 3 experiance AFL players into your team. While it wont make Port a contender at all, but it might reduce the gap from say 150+ points to say 70-80 odd if you know what I mean.

Pat Malone wrote:Taking Leon Davis is a different scenario to Chad Cornes. Cornes was obviously on the downward spiral, where as Leon is coming off an AA year.

Leon can be used on the ball, down forward or down back, where Chad's best positions where either at CHB, already covered by Chaplin and limiting opportunites for Trengove, or as the 2nd big forward, arguably better invested by playing Butcher or Westhoff.

It wont hinder the development of Port's younger players as Moore, Pittard and Co. will be played in their best positions and Leon will be worked around that. If anything, it will stop forcing Primus to pick players from SANFL Reserves who are not worthy of a game but gifted one due to a lack of depth.

Chads form, IMO, was due to the manner in which he was handled early in 2011. He was fit and ready to go and wasn't picked early, confidence down...form goes out the window too.

I acknowledge the difference between Chad and Leon in 2011, but IMO Davis was only as good as his team mates around him and has shown on more than one occasion he does not perform on the big stage.

We've just employed a new group of coaches and they should be the ones to develop the young group, not a bloke who has packed up with the sniffles because of money.

Lets face it, if family was the reason and his is in Perth then that would be the only place he would want to be.

He wants to go to Perth, thats the bottom line.

2 years at maximum for him and Port are not in their window and wont be in that time, waste of time and devlopment that they could be putting into someone else.

He would help your chances in 2012/13 a truckload more than Port or Adelaides.

I do.

Adds another dimension to our backline, I am sick off overrated plodders getting the footy and then burning it coming out of the backline. Imagine the potency of Hurn, Davis, Butler and then being able to move Smith up the ground, with the new era like Nic Nat and Schuey out of the centre. The way i look at it we have 2 years to win a flag with Cox, Embley, Glass, Lynch and co. Yes we have a huge future after that but why not try and pinch one now? Davis can also go forward and provide us with a genuine crumbing forward that we have been after for god knows how long.

It will cost us nothing, Thats why i am so keen, If we had to trade for him i would say no, but for free i will say a big yes.

Are you suggesting Davis played better with better players around him? If so wouldnt that theory work at Port, Moore and Pittard and Co would benefit from having a better player along side them, not to mention the delivery to Butcher, Schultz and Westhoff.

Ignore Davis' big stage performance, its unlikely Port will be playing any games on the big stage in his time at the club. Its irrelevant, the only reason Primus would consider it is for development of other players on the list. Its hard for Butcher to develop at the same rate as Chris Dawes when Port are getting half of the I50's.

Port's coaching and development panel includes guys like Matthew Nicks, Daniel Healy, Tyson Edwards, Josh Carr, Shaun Rehn and Gotch. I acknowledge the majority of these guys are unproven and may be very good coaches in the future, but to pick up Leon Davis for what would effectively be pick 87 (or whatever Port's last pick is, which they would pass on to get a PSD pick) seems extraordinary value, coming off 2 grand finals and the tutelage of Malthouse.

yes, he would have to be better value than pick 87 in this year's draft surely, or if not then a pick in the pre- season draft

It matters not what Adelaide Crows Lite prefer to call themselves. The Port experiment has proven to be a failure.

Also leon davis for 2 year at port would be great for port but for leon it wont be much at all.

At west coast he could be the icing on the cake that gets the eagles holy grail cos they are very very close. Leon would be to west coast what ball and jolley were to the magpies. Just that little bit extra arsenal

for leon does he wanna go out quietly or does he want another medal?

Too easy. Good to see you showing a Good old Ipswich Gal in your pic LOL. Port don't have enough supporters Booney and as long as you are called Port the majority of South Australian footy fans will despise you. I know you believe that as time passes that the old 'Magpie hate' will diminsh but that 'us against you' was a big part of what made Port Port...that is successful.

Now we have Port Power which is almost like a second composite SA side...in other words another Crows...or are they another Port Adelaide? I know you get hot over this but to us non Portonions you appear to have an indentity problem. You also have a cash flow problem as well as an annual struggle to get sponsorships. Add to that no bums on seats. Every Port fan out there that still loves the club must be bloody thankful that the league is in expansion mode and not looking to axe clubs.

Your boys have been sold a pup. You've been given the old 'divide and conquer' trick and the end result is one premiership between two clubs in the last 12 seasons. The decade before that it was an almost an annual event to hoist another Port Premiership. Yeah I know success is cyclical and all that but not for Port it wasn't. Now the Bulldogs have taken your place as the top SANFL side and the Power haven't produced a second outstanding group as yet. Meanwhile the West Coast Eagles have won a flag, and finished last since Port won one and are now back in the top four.

Looking back I don't reckon it would have done the Bluelegs any good to get in or 'the cartel' either. The AFL grabbed the cash and now Port are a shadow of what they once were. I reckon your mob is in real strife despite some good news stories coming out of Alberton towards the end of last season.
