1) Geelong 2004-2011
2) Brisbane Lions 1999-2004
158) Sydney Swans 1996-2011

I rate the Hawks of the mid-late 80's highly.
I rate Geelong of mid 80's to mid 90's if being the Bridesmaid was an achievment...

Sydney's sustained efforts were really bridesmaid quality as well? One win in that period.

Since 1989 Geelong has the equal most flags and the best win loss record in the league. Other teams to have won three premierships have also won wooden spoons during this era.

Don't be so harsh Booney. You might end up supporting them when your team folds in the next couple of years.

Its not 1 in a row that makes them great, 3 in 5 years and their sustained dominance is where the comparison lies.

It'll probably never happen again but 3 in a row wouldn't surprise me.
Plus Brisbane lost a GF to Port, how freaking bad were they? At least we lost to the Hawks who have a bit of respect!

Yes but Geelong have St Kilda and Port in their recent 3.

Quite the opposite. The AFL structure almost ensures that when you get to the top you have 3-5 years there.

Brisbane, Port, Sydney, West Coast, Geelong, St.Kilda, Western Bulldogs and Collingwood have all, since 2000, shown that once you assemble a quality squad you are able to maintain this with good managment and stay near the top of the ladder. The real test comes after 4-5 years at the top and how you manage to stay there. The real test for Geelong is in 2013 for mine. I fail to see how your argument stacks up.

Once again, your Port bashing manages to get drawn into a debate it has nothing to do with.

Don't see many teams in that lot that have won 3 flags in 5 years old son.

At the end of the day since the comp has been called the AFL Geelong has won more matches than any other club ( over 5% more), they've played in more Grand Finals than any other club, they've won zero wooden spoons and no club has won more flags.
I'm pretty damn happy and proud of them having followed them since 1984.

I know this, but all of those clubs, at some point since 2000, have spent more than three years either in Prelim finals / Grand Finals. Sure, winning them like Geelong has has not occured, but the argument that the AFL system does not permit sustained success does not reflect what is actually happening.

If Geelong come out in 2012, and end up having another good year, and get to a prelim or better, does that enhance their reputation and standing in this argument, or are premierships an absolute in this debate.

North Melbourne in the 1990's were sensational (1993 lost elimination final, 1994 lost preliminary final, 1995 lost preliminary final, 1997 lost preliminary final) but only had two premierships (1996 and 1999) along with a losing effort in 1998. They are rarely mentioned on these pages, yet had a strong period of sustained success, which is an important factor in what clubs want.

Brisbane Lions 1999 Prelim losers, semi-final losers in 2000, 2001-03 Premiers, and Grand Final losers in 2004. Reasonable successes over a period of six years. They had some of the best players, and at times were simply untouchable. They might not have been as successful for as long as North Melbourne (Brisbane finished 11th in 2005), but got the extra Premiership cup.

Geelong Cats: Qualifying final losers 2004, Semi-final losers 2005, nothing in 2006, Premiers 2007, Grand Final losers 2008, Premiers 2009, preliminary final losers 2010, premiers 2011.

North Melbourne- 7 consecutive finals appearances, two premierships, one losing grand final, three losing preliminaries, and one lost elimination final.

Brisbane- 6 consecutive finals appearances, three premierships, one losing grand final, one preliminary loss, one semi-final loss.

Geelong- 7 finals appearances in eight seasons (ongoing streak), three premierships, one losing grand final, one losing preliminary, semi-final, and qualifying final.

Those are the stats, draw from them what you will.

For what it's worth:
Sydney- 1996 losing grand final, 1997 losing qualifying final, 1998 losing semi final, 1999 losing qualifying final, 2000 no finals, 2001 losing elimination final, 2002 no finals, 2003 losing preliminary, 2004 losing semi final, 2005 premiers, 2006 losing grand finalist, 2007 losing elimination final, 2008 losing semi-final, 2009 no finals appearance, 2010 losing semi-final, 2011 losing semi final.

WCE were in the same boat as NM in the 1990's but they rarely get mentioned in the same breath.

Made the finals every year from 1990 until 2000

Won 2 premierships, Played in 3 Grand Finals and were a regular player deep into the finals.

West Coast Eagles:
Lost 1990 Qualifying Final Replay (first was a tie)
Lost 1991 Grand Final (were minor premiers)
Won 1992 AFL Premiership (clubs first Premiership)
Lost 1993 Semi Final (to Premiers Essendon)
Won 1994 Premiership (as well as Clubs second minor premiership)
Lost 1995 Semi Final (to 1990's Prelim giants The Kangaroos)
Lost 1996 Semi Final
Lost 1997 Semi Final (to 1990's Prelim giants The Kangaroos)
Lost 1998 Qualifying final
Lost 1999 Semi Final (to losing grand finalist Carlton)

Five semi final losses (Including two to North), only got past the semi stage three times (didn't lose a prelim unlike the Roos though...)
