Whilst the Brownlow seems biased and illogical at times, I think that often it brings out just how biased and illogical some peoples views are.

Just shows the MVP award is spot on. Swan prob should of won last year. Judd this year. Definitely an evener

The MVP is a popularity award based on general opinion.
The brownlow is by far and away the most prestigious award.

Dane Swan was 13th in the comp for hard ball gets (n=280)...not a bad effort

Had 56 more kicks than any other player in the competition (150 more than Judd)

Goals: Swan 32 - Judd 14

In an era where uncontested possessions dominate that stat is irrelevant.

Don't underestimate the ability to work to receive. Workrate is crucial and the ability to get to a high amount of contests to put the weight of numbers in your teams' favour is crucial.

I agree WLF, it is the most prestigious award and should be maintained in that vein.

I do however think Swan had a better year last year and Judd had a better year this year. Not to say that Judd should or shouldn't have won it last year, and Swan likewise.

I'm just saying that what we see and what the judging panel (umpires) see are two vastly different things.

The banter that goes on in media circles saying "take it off the umps" is a joke. It's the UMPIRES medal. Leave it alone. They get it right over the course of a year - and realistically no-one can fluke it over the course of an entire year.

I expect to see something similar for Swanny as they compensate for last years farce and i wont be suprised to see him poll as many if not more than last year despite a clearly inferior season  . In the last 10 years i have had good $$$ on 2 winners. Simon Black ($12,s) and the Coon Dog ($16,s). My point is....if you like a dabble, shop amongst the $10-$20 range and you might be pleasently suprised.

Obviously they are two totally separate awards, and both should be celebrated for what they are.

The MVP IMHO holds a lot of appeal, the three biggest reasons for it are:

1. It's voted on by peers who would have a better understanding of how hard certain things are to do on the field.
2. The peers would also understand important roles, meaning backmen and ruckman are likely to receive better recognition than they do in the Brownlow.
3. It doesn't contain a "fairest" aspect (really who gives a toss about whether someone is the fairest??)

The MVP therefore is more like a "Most effective" award whilst the Brownlow is "Most skilled"

Like Gadj's post, my thoughts aren't intended to denigrate the Brownlow, and the umpires have enough to concentrate on without including point 2 above - Also as with Gadj, I think the umpires pretty much get it right over the course of a season.

In any year any of the (say) top 10 fanices could (rightfully) win the award and generally it comes down to the fortune of whether players poll 1 or 3, which in most cases could obviously go either way, so even if a favourite gets up there will be conjecture among some and always will be.

I reckon Bartel was $10 in 2007 and Judd last year was around $20, so I reckon you're on the money there WW.

Any award that gives votes to 3 people out of 44 on a day is going to be flawed with accuracy.

But that's why we love the Brownlow :)

History will show that the fairest and best player in 2010 was Chris Judd.
History will also show that the fairest and best player in 2011 was Dane Swan.
History will not show that the awards were presented arse about face, Swan was the best in '10, and Judd in '11.
But regardless of the apparent fix me up, the fairest and best player of each of the last two years has received due recognition.

Brownlow Medal 2011

Would have been interesting if Murphy polled more 2 or 3 votes and not so many 1 votes.
The coaches have recognized his excellent year as he has won the coaches association award over Judd.

Very interesting how the players, coaches, and umpires voting differs....

Disagree. I think Swan has been better than Judd the last 2 years. The only reason Judd was fave this year was because he only has to sneeze on the football field to get votes.
